Black and White juried by Carlos G. Gomez

Location: Art Gallery in the Rusteberg Building
Opening Reception: January 28, 2008, 6:30 PM
Last day to view work: February 14, 2008
Admission: $3.00 (Free to Patron of the Arts members. Student semester passes available for $5.00)
Gallery Hours: Monday through Thursday 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Closed: Weekends, university holidays and between exhibitions.
"Black and White" will be opening on January 28, 2008 at the Art Gallery in the Rusteberg Building at the University of Texas at Brownsville . The opening reception will start at 6:30 PM on January 28. Admission is $3.00. Semester passes are available for all UTB students for $5.00. Admission is free to all Patron of the Arts members.
Juried by one of UTB’s own professors, Carlos G. Gòmez, "Black and White" presents many photographs from artists around the valley. The photographs come from professionals to novices and range from portraits to landscapes, from darkroom to digital, but all contain great talent and creativity from aspiring valley artists.
Juror’s Statement:
After many years of observation, I have noticed that photography is a constant and well defined venue for expression in South Texas, especially in the Rio Grande Valley . For some reason the strength and quality of photography/photographers is to a point well above the rest of the other visual arts. This can be argued and should.
Without question notable photographers did not participate in the trail, but still most of the work submitted had good fundamentals which are a must. Putting aside the power of the image and concentrating on the overall conceptual aspects of each piece was the focus in selecting the Best in Show. Beverley Harris, Felix Trego, J. Schreiber and Felipe Adel are technically sound and have as the saying go; a good eye.
However, the best in Show goes to James Miller who took photography and conceptualized the essence of it and presents the viewer with "Self-portrait with camera". Miller clearly possesses advanced thinking skills and takes advantage of technology, but what he depicts is more then a moment, but instead captures what appears to be an embryonic image that transforms into an ageing apparition. This photograph goes beyond what we know and plays with our imagination—which is my subjective view on the self-portrait.
Honorable mention goes to Beverley Harris. Both her entries are topnotch and her perception of image and understanding of photography can easily be seen in here work.

a different perspective

Ana Maria de la Garza keeps busy as an artist running a small art gallery and painting studio on 714 Palm blvd in Brownsville. I stop by recently to visit this quiet art place and found that she is a successful artist doing it all on her own. Ana commented that she is aware of ongoing opportunities to exhibit but she feels its not necessary to participate in local venues because her artwork sales as soon as its done. She noted that well known art collectors such as Dr. Montalvo have purchased her works. Ana is currently teaching art classes in both this art gallery / studio and in a studio in Matamoros, Mexico. Her art gallery and studio is open to all artist and the general public, I encourage everyone to stop by and visit.

Mauricio Saenz "The Black Life"

TAOB Blog has been honored with a sneak peek at Mauricio Saenz new work currently in production. Mauricio is one of those few artist pushing the limits in content and is developing his own original style of art. It maybe he is not trying to make the viewer think but realize what he or she already knows.

"For the last months I've been working on a series called 'THE BLACK LIFE' which are painting-installations in tryptichs shaped as coffins that evolve around diverse ideas on death and how complex this concept can be, becoming more than just appearing to be the 'end' of life."

BMFA -CANDE

BMFA to rock the art scene with a new exhibition by local artist Cande Aguilar. The exhibition titled "VIVO MAS" tributes Cande's 10yrs of producing art and is set to open with a preview show reception 'THURSDAY 01/17 @"$25 per big wig" and again 'FRIDAY1/18 with another opening night @ no cost for the general public.

This is somewhat an exciting event to see the BMFA come true to there word and promote local talent in the new BMFA building. Not that the idea was in doubt, but I do hope to see many more of these type of one man shows for there are many other local artist well deserving this type of opportunity. So, never hurts to be prepared my fellow artistas.. I encourage everyone to put there big wig on and support Cande's 10yr accomplishment as an artist and join him at the new BMFA....
