Painting by Celeste de Luna
There is certainly a lot to learn from Celeste de Luna's painting "La Batalla".
A self-portrait that describes the artist perspective of a male dominant world. As it can clearly be seen, a masculine masked man firmly holds the woman's head, almost forcing and given no choice, as both subjects gaze back at the viewer. The masked wrestler is defined strong easily able to overpower the female subject at his will. A blue saint rests against the shoulder of the female setting a calm personality between them. The image is then framed in a transparent red in an uneven manner and glorified by a star above them, simulating the idea of a picture within a picture, which brings forth another message of perhaps the idea that real life is not what it seems.
What I find distinctive in Celeste pallet is her use of vibrant yellows and orange contrast to the use of black, which has continued in her late work. Her brush strokes radiate light and echoes across the painting, making the painting loud expressing her inner feelings.
Through her art Celeste de Luna is in my opinion becoming another inspiring voice in our community that expresses awareness in social, political and religious issues.

Chicano 15: Celebrating Fifteen Years of the Serie Project
In 1991, Austin-artist Sam Coronado participated in the Atelier artist-residency program at Self-Help Graphics, a nationally-recognized center for Latino arts dedicated for nurturing printmakers and promoting cultural awareness located in Los Angeles. As a result of this experience, Coronado founded the Serie Print Project modeled after the Atelier artist-residency at Self-Help Graphics in 1993. Since its inception 15 to 18 artists are annually invited through a referral and juror system to participate in the Serie Project. Selected participants then come to Coronado Studio to learn the basic process of fine art printmaking and to create an original serigraph print with the aid and collaboration of a provided Master Printer free of charge.
The produced serigraph prints from the Serie Project have gained the attention and support of multiple museums such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Austin Museum of Art, and the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University. Selected prints have been featured in the PBS Series “Art Journeys” and in the art publications Triumph of Our Communities, Chicano Art for our Millennium, and Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art. Moreover, National contemporary art exhibitions such as Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement have included work from past Serie artists. Although Serie Project emerged from very modest beginnings it has successfully held over 250 artists-in –residency programs and continues to nurture emerging and established artists. Serie Project is one of the few Latino arts organizations that continually influence the contemporary art world; for example, professional Chicano/Latino artists such as Malaquias Montoya, Alma Lopez, Vincent Valdez, Ester Hernandez, Delilah Montoya, Santa Barraza, Alex Rubio, and Gaspar Enriquez have previously collaborated with the Serie Project. The unprecedented nature of such a Latino Arts organization in Texas makes the Serie Project extremely unique. Serie Project is one of very few Latino-owned print studios that aim to increase diversity and awareness of multi-cultural artists with 2/3 of all Serie Project artists of Latino or Latin American descent.
The objective of the Serie Project is for the artists to not only develop a new artistic technique, but to provide an avenue of expression not readily available for Chicano/Latino artists. As we reflect on the past productions of the Serie Project and its
accomplishments we must remember that the campaign for Chicano/Latino art visibility and awareness is still ongoing, and Serie Project represents this continued need for a Chicano/Latino presence that will persist to fight for a position in the art world. Throughout its sixteen-year duration Serie Project has helped facilitate each of its selected artists to create their own original serigraph print and individual artistic vision and hopefully Serie will be able to continue this tradition for the next generation of artists.

The Brownsville Heritage Complex hosts 1st Sunday Music and Merienda Series: Remembering Lydia Mendoza
BROWNSVILLE, August 2009-The Brownsville Heritage Complex, in historic downtown Brownsville, invites the public to 1st Sunday Music and Merienda Series, a musical lecture program presented by Joe and Rosa Perez of Rumbo al'Anacua on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 2 p.m. The event is free for BHA members and $2 for non-members. The event is sponsored in part by Texas Commission on the Arts.
The Music and Merienda series is a monthly music lecture incorporating stories, poems, and socio-historic commentary with vintage Mexican roots music performed in the rustic ranchero duet style. Topics will vary each month. The Sunday music presentation coincides with the hour of "la merienda," an afternoon gathering for coffee and pastry that is a long time South Texas tradition.
October's series is called "Remembering Lydia Mendoza" A recipient of the prestigious National Medal of the Arts, Lydia Mendoza was the first Mexican-American woman to have her music recorded in the United States. She became an idol among working class audiences who called her "La Cancionera de los Pobres" (The Songstress of the Poor).
Natives of Premont , Texas , Joe and Rosa currently reside in Olmito on the outskirts of Brownsville . They have lived in the Rio Grande Valley since 1980, relocating from Austin to accept teaching jobs in the border area, first in McAllen and then in Brownsville.
Joe and Rosa perform as a duet they have named Rumbo al' Anacua in honor of godparents who loved music and always found time to relax under an old anacua tree in their backyard in Kingsville , Texas . The duet performs old música ranchera along with blues and folk music that include original compositions.
Pieces of original poetry are woven throughout the presentation. With its interpretations of música ranchera, Rumbo al' Anacua evokes a rustic style that speaks of musical heritage as it has been preserved among people living north of the Rio Grande .
A former drafting and English teacher, Joe works as a technical writer, and volunteers at the Narciso Martínez Cultural Arts Center . Rosa taught English and Mexican-American Studies at Hanna High School in Brownsville from 1984 until her retirement in 2001. She is a former Board Member of the Narciso Martínez Cultural Arts Center , and is still an active volunteer. Both were also volunteers at Casa de Cultura Carlotta Petrina in Brownsville during its initial stages of operation.
The Brownsville Heritage Complex is located at 1325 E. Washington Street and is managed by the Brownsville Historical Association. For more information on BHA programs and exhibits please call 956-541-5560

The Business of Art and a self-taught artist world..
Certainly you don't need a license to practice-create art or to buy art supplies. In the mainstream world, perhaps since the late 80's early 90's, we are taught that any one can be an artists, anyone can paint and or create. It is advertise everywhere, in do it yourself books, cable shows, popularize and pushed by big companies such as Wal-Mart, Michael's, Hobby Lobby.. The world of the self-taught artist emerges into the respectful art galleries,, breaking down further the idea of what is art.

There is no logic in quiting.. Viva -The Art of Brownsville
A note from -The Art of Brownsville- Administrator :
"There is most certainly a positive attitude going forward..I don't beleive in dwelling in the past, but that we learn from it and move on." GT
I wouldn't say I will be running TAOB different from before.. but surely more expiremental, push it to the edge, perhaps as an art form. I question the idea that this site can be about both life and art. The reason I say that is because I can't help but think as to how one influences the other.
I haven't heard or seen much art or anyone with the exception of Amigos Artistas -Art in the Park Sept. 13 - which was I think another successful annual event. Eduardo Ibarra taking first place : $500.00 award followed by Noe Palmanez. as judged winners of the event.. One of the guest judges was Carlos G. Gomez. Congratulations gentlemen., Alot of art, alot new faces at this event, and to the surprise of many, alot of people buying art, which was a good thing..
Chicano Art -at Rusteburg Gallery, I went by today 9/24 - but noted Gallery now closes at 5pm.. bummer for the 9-5 working man. I had to window watch the show. One of the things I noted, which I like is that prints are exhibited framed without the glass. Which always helps, cuts out the glare which steals away from the imagery . It also gives the viewer a chance to appreciate the textures and colors.
13th Annual Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival coming up "October 8th to 11th-2009". A four day event that will open at Shannanigans Irish pub followed by a 2days at Jacob Brown Auditorium, with its finale -the infamouse street party in front of the old Capitol Theater in Historic Downtown Brownsville. BSPA - through coordination with Imagenes Art Studio- Toni Hudson artist are welcomed to display art throught this events..
