Gabriel Trevino Blogs about Art....
"Art was a tortilla floating in the Rio Grande," my inner Chicano voice rose to the occasion.... Truth is, I was eating papas con huevo when I wrote that..
Years have passed since last I heard anyone mention The Art of Brownsville blog. Perhaps it wasn't to the lack of updates, but to the lack of ganas, the will of the people to converse about the goings on in the local art world.. The world we know to be obscure, isolated in its own time....I picture a group of artists making noise inside a box world , with walls so thick, that echoes so loud it only hurts those in it.... gt
"Art is ok in pictures, but you have to see in person to truly understand its beauty and or its complexity......"
Art is sometimes found near the river, in its gentle stream that washes away helpless bodies and political bureaucracy as the media best described it.
On a hot Sunday, amongst the vendors of old cloth and used toys, art sold for a couple of dollars , enough to buy six pack of cerveza.
Where does art come from, if not through the cracks of border walls as the wind picks up in mourning whistle , a reminder of those lost in its path?
It didn't matter where art came from, for all I knew, art was a gum that stuck under my left shoe while I was crossing the bridge , as I carried a bag of corn tortillas, novelas and sope .
Throughout the years the attention local art has gotten , has been without a doubt a positive one, with potential to push art in to a higher standard.
Like zombies we walk across the art gallery as a worn out sponge, nothing absorb. With open eyes throughout the ten years, of what I can recall unattended observation, " to see without looking" or "to notice without care", paintings communicating and provoking ideas, but not a single viewer there..
I think its import to observe, but more important is to create dialogue that question what we are seeing, thinking and feeling.
Perhaps its true, were all superstars, rock stars of our own nature, free to think without accepting anyone else truth.
No art is better than the other, just different variations. What may be popular now may lose its value and recognition as time unfolds.
I could conclude nothing, I have seen the Brownsville art scene and ideology transfix sate and redefined itself. New institutions emerge, as old ones continue to be peddling at the same slippery slope.
Here is where I think those that produce the venues for art should take greater risk in creativity to standout from what keeps it from evolving.
The work being produced at all levels from those emerging and those established has radiated into a perfect splendor.
I sat with the same inner voice starring at what I thought were ten years of time well spent, perhaps. The Art of Brownsville has given everything, and sacrificed itself to the greater good. It was, I should say is, a tool, to subscribe into the idea that several of us artists, can come together and grow, with the same intention in mind as it was to produce art. Local art as it was described. Local because it was of this region and Local , because it had the crazy attitude of rebellion.
