As I stared at the paintings of Ray Smith at the new BMFA building during the ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday I couldn't help but remember a memory of a recent day at the pulga when a fellow artist mentioned how my paintings will seem very small and meaningless compared to these ginormous $100,000 surrielist paintings of Ray Smith. It was an uncomfortable memory which gives me a feeling I have trouble understanding for it is a complex theory. Lucky me, a voice in the back ground from Cliff echoed me out of my day dream "Don't stick your nose in the paintings", he followed by saying these paintings are best viewed from afar. Cliff is an old freind I had met at the end of the 2005 BMFA International Art Show. He always had a pleasant conversation about the arts. He mentioned how he walked in one day to the BMFA and helped Mark Clark stretch on of the Ray Smith canvas painting that had just arrived. He also mentioned how one of the paintings were on what appeared to be doors. I kept on enjoying my first day at the new museum and said hello to all the people I knew that were also in attendance. The ceremony was great and a clear reminder of how all the hard work has payed off to all the wonderfull people who have made this museum possible. I highly recommend everyone to go check out this beutiful new museum and maybe even become a member. I myself am sure to go back many many times again....
The open house was great and unfortunately I missed the ribbon cutting ceremony because I had to work. I did however get to give the Ray Smith exhibition another look and got to see Mark Clark sketching portraits and Rivera High School students making art in the Wells Fargo gallery. The BMFA's hard work has definitely paid off and the community is so proud!
On the other note, I think that your fellow artist was wrong when he said that your artwork would seem meaningless next to Ray Smith's paintings. As if size alone would automatically improve a piece or make it more meaningful. We can't all be Christo and Jean Claude! lol. Heck the Mona Lisa is only 30in x 20in, would that make it less meaningful next to a massive mural by Diego Rivera? What I love about art is how it is ALWAYS open to interpretation and how it is always evolving, pushing all types of limits, it being size or the perceived meaning in our hearts, and so much more! Art can sweep you off your feet!
