How do you price art ? In Brownsville, as far as I know the artist is free to price its own art ? I don't think I have ever heard of any gallery or museum institute price the art for the artist based on what they think the art is worth. This maybe true all the way to Mcallen, I don't know you tell me. I ask why is that ? Shouldn't it be up to the curator to price the art ? Is that a task to tough to handle ? What would that be like I ask? Would it push the artist to deliver work at a higher standard ? Or would that just add to the misery of the starving artist ?
Sometimes I think of the value of the art based on the consistency of the work of the artist. If the artist is producing this year and the next, but then takes a 10 year decides not to be an artist because it is to tough or decided to have a carreer change into perhaps selling ice cream and break away to where no art is produce what good or what value would the art have then ?
I think the art with the best value is of those who truly lived there entire life around producing there own art.
Gallerys and perhaps Musuems for that matter may in time may come and go, one year they are the center of the art world the next, they are a beuty salon.
But what consistency , what dedication , what strugle must the true artist outlive to the day of his death producing the work he was born to do ?
Support the art of Brownsville not just today because its a trend... but tomorrow and the next..

All in one post- Art Review -Brownsville Art Scene and the Economy
Catching up with the readers of TAOB, October has been a busy and hectic month for all of us... I think, the Brownsville Art scene..and the Economy slump, Falling Gas prices and Presidential Elections coming up..
So what do you think... Obama or McCain for president ? Who's agenda would we in the Valley benefit more from ?
Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival was exciting this month.. Amigos Artistas joined in by exhibiting a small taste "15works-paintings" of artist of Oaxaca, Mexico, which they will be exhibiting in December at the Historic. The show is a must see.
Also at the Galeria 409 is the work of Cande Aguilar, I got a chance to see this show before the opening, I thought more than half of the work was typical of his style similar to that of his "vivo mas" exhibit which was earlier this year at the BMFA , but brought a new work to this exhibit "untitled" a collage of recycle bags spread against a 5 x 8 frame and wrapped together in industrial wrapping. The piece is phenomenal, it breaks new ground, I thought it to be very important and progressive similar to that of Eduardos Cheeto Painting one of my favorite works.
At the UTB a recent show opened this past Tuesday "Self-Portrait -Invitational " . A group show of several artist ranging from Toni Hudson to Cesar Martinez. The center piece or the piece that stood out the most for this show in my opinion was Gomez self-portrait collage which completely broke away from Gomez re-known style of social abstract surrealist oil painting. Breaking down the collage, made up by "overalls and t-shirt that are hung up against a chalk board "-these overalls typically used by Gomez , and a "hanging eraser "- perhaps suggesting a stand off , a challange of some sort against the viewer. The chalk board which appears in heavy use and erased leaving only a word "machacado" -which means dry eatable meat - perhaps representing the human body- the carnal side of Gomez- the flesh and blood he is made of. Also tacked against the board is an oil painting on paper that depicts a sketchy drawing of Gomez writing on the chalk board - for me a representation of his devotion to his carrier as a professor at the university. Above the overalls is a oil painting of a red, white and green flag- suggestive of Gomez being born in Mexico, with a image of a snake which seams to scar itself on to the canvas - the snake for me is simbolic reflecting a probable shedding his skin metaphorically speaking - in respect to him taking off the clothes off his back and now on display as his work, also perhaps suggesting his work now showing a new skin and entering a new era in his life and in his work, the snake is curled up in a circle almost as a silhouette of an eye. On the flag there is also a series of silver skull pins outlining a skull descending perhaps his life as an artist until his death. The work is complex by all means, a strong message to the viewer.. I think this is the one that will make them think the unthinkable, for me it already has..

Yareth Fernandez and Luis Sanchez
Art Review : Local Artist Antinori and I dropped by to see this show last week and right off the bat walking in gave the show thumbs up. I thought the show was very well curated, the two artists work looked good together, several peices, but didn't feel crowded.
I was pleased to see the pastel drawings were very well matted and and framed, very clean,it suited for Luis pastel work which was very sharp and clean. I would defenitely want to see his next show in pastels.
The work of Yareth reminded me of the ink work of Dali - but taken it to her own surrealist world. Asthetically the paintings looked slicked and of high quality. I would say my favorite was a three piece painting of characters being animated by the next painting dragging heart across the river.
I couldn't help but say great show.. Even the prices looked great, very well priced. Get out there check out this show..wish I would have gone to the openning..

I am currently a senior student at the University of Texas at Brownsville and pursuing a degree in Studio Art. My main concentration is painting; however I tend to experience other areas in art. My approach and growth in art has meaning in my artwork moving towards humanity and nature. The artwork deals with ideas of how some part of humanity has limited their minds and souls, disrespecting themselves and other creatures of the earth. Moreover, humanity has become so attached to the stereotypes of society that the soul and mind cannot function together, therefore, both get lost and the physical body is blocked. In addition, I also deal with the division and obligation reconstructing harmony in lives between nature and humanity. However; the discord and negation of humanity to control and destroy nature’s habitat has given nature no acceptance, respect nor value for what it is worth.
Yareth Fernandez
When it comes to art I have one simple goal, to tell a story. Many times as I look through history books and see different works of art it seem to make more sense to me then the passage written under them. Art allows me to understand things from a visual perspective giving me an ability to think differently than with words. As a student I have learn much about the use of different materials. I often find myself working with mix media. Once an idea is born I try to find the right materials to portray the message. Coming from an energetic person, my technique portrays my persona through ruff and expressive works. Many times it is by taking abstraction and combining it with every day events. The development of my work has been through the influences of such artist as Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo. Dali’s ability to take what is real and twist it around really caught my interest as a young man, as well as Picasso use of color and creative abstraction which took me to another level of thinking. Frida’s express full paintings were like journals of personal thought. There is no need to hide; art can be anything and everything. Art is creation.

“We’re happy to be celebrating another milestone,” says NMCAC co-founder and Festival artistic director, Ramon de Leon. “We’ve done a lot of work over the years to celebrate our music and our people and we’ve had good results, like Taquachito Nights.”

Art Review : BISD Faculty Show
Here is a show with a lot of potential, the work of some of Brownsville most talented artist, not holding back to say including myself on this one as a guest artist, in the new B M F A building, that in my opinion failed to be what it should, an exhibition and a grand openning that truly suits and honors the art educators of Brownsville. I gotta say I just didn't feel it, it lacked a curator, the art literally hung everywhere and anywhere, as if lets just get this over with.
Being around when this show was hung, for some reason it felt this show was rush, same day drop and hang your own, fend for your space.. What I did not understand is why the show was not curated by the museums curator, does this event lack funding or volunteering ? What is the arrangement there ?
Speaking with some of the artist on this show, for feed back I heard, "well I have new work but I just brought whatever, since it is a mandatory event, I would like to use my new work for a one man show, where I control the invornment, this is simply just chaos ".
I can't help but note what teachers must go through, on Mondays to go to work and rush over to the museum of home pickup the paintings, rush to the museum and hang. The work they are hanging is work they take pride in, work they do at home or in there studio at there convinience.
I thought the reception, lacked celebration to honor the artist, for what an art teachers goes through, "add funding for supplies,or do with what you got, perhaps art is not longer thought with just a ebony pencil and paper, it is much more complex ",sure its a school night, but where was the wine and cheese reception, where was the tamales and menudo, where was the mariachis ..
Let us celebrate the artist, the art educators of Brownsville, let us fund them so that they have all the supplies they need, let us provide them with bigger rooms and eisels and proper facilities so that they may teach and enrich our children with the greatest light I have ever known............the knowledge of art.
