Art Review : BISD Faculty Show

Here is a show with a lot of potential, the work of some of Brownsville most talented artist, not holding back to say including myself on this one as a guest artist, in the new B M F A building, that in my opinion failed to be what it should, an exhibition and a grand openning that truly suits and honors the art educators of Brownsville. I gotta say I just didn't feel it, it lacked a curator, the art literally hung everywhere and anywhere, as if lets just get this over with.

Being around when this show was hung, for some reason it felt this show was rush, same day drop and hang your own, fend for your space.. What I did not understand is why the show was not curated by the museums curator, does this event lack funding or volunteering ? What is the arrangement there ?

Speaking with some of the artist on this show, for feed back I heard, "well I have new work but I just brought whatever, since it is a mandatory event, I would like to use my new work for a one man show, where I control the invornment, this is simply just chaos ".

I can't help but note what teachers must go through, on Mondays to go to work and rush over to the museum of home pickup the paintings, rush to the museum and hang. The work they are hanging is work they take pride in, work they do at home or in there studio at there convinience.

I thought the reception, lacked celebration to honor the artist, for what an art teachers goes through, "add funding for supplies,or do with what you got, perhaps art is not longer thought with just a ebony pencil and paper, it is much more complex ",sure its a school night, but where was the wine and cheese reception, where was the tamales and menudo, where was the mariachis ..

Let us celebrate the artist, the art educators of Brownsville, let us fund them so that they have all the supplies they need, let us provide them with bigger rooms and eisels and proper facilities so that they may teach and enrich our children with the greatest light I have ever known............the knowledge of art.

I thought the exhibition and reception went pretty well though I do agree it would have been nice to see more people from the public community attend, though there were plenty of supporters from friends, family and the schools. And though it may not have had a particular organization or theme, it was mostly a showcase of art educators' art brought together by art educators on an extra-curricular basis. With our busy schedules and complex daily duties at school and in our personal lives, I have to give kudos to just how well the exhibition set-up came together in one evening with some 50+ artists all participating, in comparison to last year where a few teachers were left behind to do a bulk of the work. This year I saw more involvement and help in the hanging of the show, with teachers bringing their own hammers, ladders, tools and such, and all helping one another! Word is, the show keeps getting better and better each year, so here's to progress and the advancement of art appreciation and education in our community!

PS: No wine was provided because of the high probability of students and families attending

I have to agree that the show was a lot better this year than the previous, in fact, there were artpieces that got my attention and kept me awake. However, I have to say that it still needs a lot of work and organization, and most of all a curator to give it a nice flow, set more rigorous requirements, and the one who decides what should go in and what should not. I saw things ranging from 3 pieces per artist when they should be 2 at the most, to overpriced work, to high school level work, to great pieces hung besides the offices and mediocre ones in the main hall, to people who are just looking for their 5 minutes of glory. The exhibit looked overcrowded, high schoolish to some extent (with some great exceptions), and without unity, not meaning that it didn't have a theme but it lacked the flow that a show like this should have. We are talking about the exhibit that showcases the art educators' work but it seems that they have been happy with results since there hasn't been anyone that has complained about it and that they don't want to set higher expectations for both the museum and art educators to excel, but rather seem comfortable with what they are doing. The museum and this kind of exhibits will continue being forgettable and worth of a small city who doesn't want to open up to new approaches to set higher quality shows. And yeah, I'm saving my new work for opportunities that will let it breathe with more space and be worth of the effort, time, money, planning, and most of all the thought that I put into it.

To Mauricio and Gabriel:
Gabriel and Mauricio:
As Anonymous says,
"Leave it to the free mind and spirit, to think about art." No, as I'm sure you know, it refers to the Art of thinking, you are so left of center, that it appears your freely training the mind for itself, free of lies and fantansies and prejudices that wrap around us from an early age. In this time and I hope it be the last you have put the center of your knowledge at danger and your work isn't so hot either I would like to see you go with 25 hours of sleep a week just to get the pay off. But instead you offer you words and they don't contribute to the Brownsville Art Community, too much to say you could have helped a little more and had as big of a pay off as the faculty did. Unlike you, I did enjoy the show and the flavor and developed atmosphere. I counter your "T" on our thumbs and the "L" on our shoulders and ask you to please get off the walls and start participating and hang shows yourself.
