Local Artist Celeste De Luna will be presenting her artwork in a group show at Centro Cultural de La Raza along other Latino artists from around the country. De Luna, former D’Arte Centre gallery director, educator, and artist will be presenting two paintings in this group show based on the topic of deportation. “Partera Passport”, a 36 * 48” painting was inspired by the story of Valley Native Maria Teresa Payan de Castillo and her subsequent deportation after applying for a passport and being accused of having a fraudulent birth certificate doctored by a midwife. “Both my parents were born at home and I felt a real anger and resentment at the blanket suspicion placed over a certain group of people, namely Mexican-Americans born on the border at home” says De Luna. De Luna’s participation in this exhibit is being sponsored in part by UTPA, where she is a graduate student and teaching assistant, and by the University of San Diego ’s Ethnic Studies department, Calaca Press and the Red CalacArts Collective. For more information please contact Celeste De Luna at 956-454-1809 or Brent E. Beltrán at (619) 920-1713 or calacapress@cox.net.
