I saw the exhibit this past saturday. Its a great space really enjoyed seeing Marks paintings up in his studio. As for the Clone Zone, Minimalist abstraction with graffitti like markmaking in flatlatex wall paint. There was a smaller painting of a yellow circle with a nice impasto in oil. I think the larger painting could have used a little of linseed or stand oil to add some visual variety to the surface. Overall I think the exhibit was like a nice fresh and tasty salad entree as I waited for a main course that never arrived. Otro gran Manchador del Valle de Sur de Texas.
Unfortunally, many artists / painters have adopted the philosophy that "there ain't enough to go around - so I've got to get mine!" The "shrinking" mode of thinking is also reinforced by other members of the art world. The foolish platitudes that there are too many artists / painters for the small number of commercial galleries- throw artists into panic attack or a chronic state of anxiety; some artists develope sharp elbows. A belief in scarcity is played out in many areas of an artist's career.
Some artists/painters exhibit their work at galleries under unfavorable terms or circumstances because they believe it is their only chance to show their work and they must seize the moment.
Many artists/ painters withhold from fellow artists introductions and referrals to art world contacts because of a fear that there isn't enough to go around.
In our society, there is a myth that to be antibourgeois, a free spirit, and classless, one should NOT have an occupation. The myth implies that beign an artist / painter is a state of mind and cast great doubts on wheter beign an artist is a valid profession.
Seeds in doubt suggesting that fine art is not a valid occupatio are planted and reinforced by educators, who, under the guise of providing career advice, emphasize a lot of education courses to have something to fall back on difficult career adjustments by the omissions from art education, and by the self-image projected through the art sub - culture that discourages, and even scorns, attention to business management and competence in it. In attitudes and preparations, I believe most of us begin with so many hard -strikes against us.
