How much is my artwork worth ? How much am I worth? How much do I need this year, this month, this week? What can I afford ? How much can I be earning?
There are artists who have identified with poverty for so long that when money finally comes their way, they are consumed with enormous guilt, a theme that dominates their existence. These artists who become "Little Johnny One - Notes", churning out whatever made money in the past, in fear that venturing in new directions will bring them back to Poverty City.
Many ignorant and uncultured people are intimidated by visual art, including many of those who buy and sell art.
The fear of visual art is perpertuated throughout our schooling, beginning as early as kindergarten, as we are bombarded with conflicting messages about the importance and relevance of visual art in our country. Art is presented as a " filler " subject - not in the same league, for example, as science, mathematics, history, or sports.
Art is worth as much as it can get.
Locally speaking..some artist are conservative with the pricing others go for broke. I wouldn't say there is a stable market or consistency in pricing on the artists behalf.. or a steady flow of buyers lineing up for that matter - but art is being sold, which we can say its a young but growing market.
The market known in Brownsville is simply consistent to the local venues and the quality of the shows.
A painting can always be resold a hundred times over even beyond the artists lifetime.
Now, more than ever before, there so many opportunities to exhibit and sell artwork. The flea market is a very reasonable and active market , for the poor people of Brownsville, whom never had been to an art gallery / muuseum, can you all imagine - where do we live. The " Pulga " is the perfect pace to ever start an " Art mearket ", we also lack art collectors at any level.
Luis Jimemez did it, and he became one of of America's great. I will disagree. Very lttle opportunites, quality opportunites exist. I once talked to a local painter who mention that a show in Chicago would cause him 3 to 4 thousand dollars to crate, and ship the artwork. Renting a U-Haul, gas lodgeing would cost 2500.
This many opportuities where are they?
Yes, I must agree ... So rigth... We live at the end of Cultural. social - status ans economic Civilization. No wonder We in Brownsville are full of Second - hand clothing stores ; .99 cents stores , thrift Shops, Pulgas, Bazzars, Cantinas. etc... why ???
Everything goes around with Food Stamps - a Socialist / Communist Welfare Program !!!
Been to New York, its the same, except differenct people
In New York, for example, an artist / painter based in that city - an art marketing advisor or art gallery dealers and art consultants , observes: The inner workings of galleries operatinions, and why so many art dealers sink or barely keep their galleries afloat, and live to neitherv their own nor artist's / painter's expectations. It is because they are the very same reasons that prevent artists from achieving their goals, with or without gallery representation.
I think that an artist attains their goals when they have a good day in the studio. Anything esle is doesn't matter.
Stop putting all your eggs in a single basket. Submitting one grant application a year or submitting artwork to one gallery every six months is only a gesture: strong , affirmative results do not come from apathy, Depresive / sadness and self - Pitty.
Create oppurtunities for things to happen; THINK BIG AND BROAD!
Make inroads in many directions... What You want are lots of baskets filled with lots of eggs.
