"The BMFA International Art Show is probably becoming, if not already the most prestigious show for local artist to enter and sum their artistic ability against each other and competitively against international entries."
Elisa Filippone - Title:"The girl from Paris" . Allot of character on this profile painting of a young girl. Photo realistic , the expression on the subject is very demanding, there is lose style about the sky blue head band which is almost too shimmering, as if aquatic, which takes away from the expressive eyes. Another piece that is complimented to an extent by the frame. I think several artist will question the idea of framing, but I think when it comes to a competition, I think you have to bring that extra edge to make it work in some cases.
Diana Karina Torres - "Enrique"- Price:$700 . At first glance I thought this piece was a painting by Rigoberto, to my surprise , it was not. The massive subject ponders about as he lays restlessly in bed. The black and white painting seems cold, unpleasing, the red blanket simply has no dominating color effect. This painting was hung left exiting the entrance, in between switches and alarm lights, which I think took from the painting. I enjoyed this piece.
Cristina Anzures - Title:Kiktapuk Princess from 3500 - $500. Here a style not much seen. The drawing on plexy glass seems digitally produced.
Adriana Cisneros - Title: Cesar - Price: $500.
Surreal - contemporary, very fresh, black and white photo, of a subject sparking a smoke. I think this piece seems to pay tribute to Americana, American pop culture- the bad boy image. Piece captures the viewers attention. You almost simply pause when you realize the man has only one eye. A distortion of reality. You can only wonder what is going on in this piece, which I think pulls the viewer in, which does the work much justice.
Something I have always noticed about , pencil drawings and water colors, they are always cast aside, never the center of attention of these types of shows. They are largely overlooked.. I think , they are accepted but not recognized as a major entry, which is something to think about. I think they should have a show of there own, in order to invest to there attention.
Teadoro Estrada - Title: The Visitor - $3,500 - This organic white spinal organism like hovers gently above the abstract carcass. I was actually intreged to learn Teadoro had produced this piece having seen much of his work on display in local shows, this piece cetainly was most impressive distintictive from his previouse work.. Again a peice which label and ribbon was tagged to the nose of the peice, making it an unpleasing sight to photograph, but certainly a congratulations winning "Honorable Mention".
One of the most upfront controversial pieces entered. The doll symbolically expresses border issues, in direct to the border laws and ideology towards pregnant immigrant woman. The rag doll sits almost gagged to silence, and paranoia, the viewer is summoned captive to the uncomfort.

Why are you telling us this? A solid AOB critique would have been better.
Enjoyed your critique of some of the paintings. Where would you suggest the tags on floor sculptures be placed in future shows or should this work have been set up on a pedestal?
I will send you my amateur photos from the International Show if you would like to see them.
It is always a pleasure to invest attention to the work of all artist and shows as possible, which is for the most part the mission of taob. It is with great hope that it creates a dialogue between us , so that we can enrich the essence of our art culture and we can contribute to the evolution of art.
The critique is ongoing, for the most part only just begun, open for contribution, aswell through your comments..
It is in fact a large show, and much to think about, and absorb..
Many thanks for your continuing visits..
best regards...

You got it Gabriel, you are really helping people to wake up to all this mediocricy and get them out of their "little comfort zone" . Keep on pushing all your talent and thanks for all your help, buddy !
The critque is intrsting, shows personal taste. lost in all this was estrada's huge sculpture taht was awfully dispalyed. this too me was the best one. the show as a whole lacked logic and was pointless the way it was presented. the odd level of skills in a so called interantional show did not relfect well. half of the work should have been tossed out, maybe more. to answer the questoopon of lables, place it in the most immediate soppot. why was taht placed there> this too was a mature peice that was lost. the museum could have asked for help from the local experts at he university for hanging and curating the work.
... Pardon Me, But Why Monsieur!?!

On Tony MuNoz' Piece and I Mean a " Squared out - grilled out PICTURE - PORTRAIT " of one of his Daugther, that's so Elementary to Copy from a digital photo. Anybody can do it - I learned that in second grade at El Jardin Elementary school. So Nothing New, No Creativity nor Imagination !!!
agree, all but 5 artworks should havebeen in the show. most same old worn out work. the egg/flower painting was thought provolking and out of this world.
I Don't Agree, It was also copied - out from one Gomez' TSC / UT - B students... Also the " Jalapeno - Goofy looking face " Has been done so many times by Artists/ painter Alberto Gonzalez ---Check out His Website !!!
sounds personal more than anything esle, the apinting kicsass out of curioticy what student amargada
What is Gonzalez’s URL, that pepper he calls the handsome pepper first appeared as an pro Mexican icon around 1999, it later transformed into what you call a goofy face. That icon came about in 2006 in a drawing on paper from his unplugged body of work which I now own. I was a stylistic humorous imagine of a woman in a martini glass facing temptation. Later he did a large drawing of it that I saw at Gallery 409, but could not afford. Last he told me it sparked an idea to create a body of work based on the difficulties of the local Mexican American people and how they are viewed and are losing ground. RM
the munoz painting is well painted and i doubt that very few down here can paint like that. the skill level is there and he is in command of what he is doing. I know of three people who have that skill, E Ibarra, one of my ex students D Torres and Rigo G. I know for a fact that in Matamoros, there are a great deal of traditional painter. Its a good painting, take it for what it is...as for the critique on my paintings, keep them coming...cgg

Obviously you’re a dumb butt, if you study the painting closely, you can see that it has a great deal of things going on. The blunt Chicano statement in black and white is very clear and it is profound. His early heroes and the foundation of his work is echoed on two capsules, the first a Velazquez and the second Mantegna. His surreal roots imbedded in Mexican art and his loyalty to the people of the Valley as all those goofy peppers as you describe are rooted in the cosmic Raza. The rose peddles with the ever seeing eyes surrounded by a Brownsville sky, what a jerk you are. It’s tilted, “I am Blessed”, we should all be that blessed. The color of the painting screams in the museum and has a lot more going on that I am still trying to figure out every time I go see it. This fellow is the most mature artist in the show and it shows. JS
This is the worst museum show I have ever seen. I had a hard time figuring out what was the school show and what was the international show. Even the Frida Khalo photo show was weak, this were copies of photos from the Casa Azul, very sad. Where is Carol DeMoss, she really put on some good shows.
Example of Buyers; The Impulsive buyer versus calculating buyers...There are also people who hate to be told anything --- as opposed to the ones who want a full biography of the artist / painter. The ones who have to tell you their life stories before they are ready to buy.
The apparently TIMID, DOCILE client with a will of steel; and the BARGAIN HUNTERS who will ask for adiscount at the drop of a hat.
thanks Mrs Gonzalez
Jalapeno faces? I thought they were theater masks.
The guy with the big nostrils is the Mantegna, and the Franchute kid at upper right center is the Velasquez, right "JS"? Glad you pointed it out. I never woulda guessed. And the plumbing diagram is the political statement? Thanks for the clarification- it was so subtly done it went right over my head.
Is the message more important than the technique in a art piece / artwork ?

To a point your right, its a metaphor, for people....cgg
They are equally important. content and form are inextricably connected.
there was a jalapeno faced humanoid that was the mascot for the 1986 soccer world cup in Mexico called Pique that I think predates the jalapeno face cartoon much debated here I can't remember the name of the cartoonist.

Interesting painting got to head out and see the actual painting at the museum.
This BMFA art exhibition was a great show, the most exhuberant exhibit since Ray Smith came to town. Lets all support this struggling Museum with our donations, volunteering - time and above all - with our positive reviews. Ms. Maricella Ronquillo de Hinojosa is doing all this great work with Her heart, she's NOT receiving any monetary pay for her labor. Lets all thank her and the rest of her Board of directors.
So the Dominguez was what than?
My check is in the mail
I'll pass.
they need a new board, one with people who have an art background
... And more Avante - Garde courage for our new painters / artists~~!!!
