I have to agree. This guy has been around for a long time and has opened the door for many and has represented our region to the outside world all his life. I wish that someday I too can be thought of in that way. If you look at his resume regardless of whether you like him or his work he has fought and is a player in the art world. He is the first to tell you that if you don’t fight and believe in yourself you have no business in this field. Look at Saenz, de la Rosa, Candelario, and I could name more, they are all fighting to get where he is at. I wish that when I am his age that I am still making good art and showing it. He is not a fashionable Chicano Artist like so many. He has stayed true to his mission and along the way he helps pull people up. He once told me, Image if I weren’t a Mexican; I wonder how my artistic life would be. Can you imagine how easy it would be to show your artwork? When I asked him what he meant, he said “try getting a show outside the Valley or Texas. They just don’t really care for us andwhat we represent”. “We have something they don’t and that scares them”. I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but he curates and he always gives the underdog a shot regardless of whether their art is good or not. Those who know him understand him and think of him in a positive way. He has given me much as a student of painting and he has always bragged about his ex students who now have MFA. He really cares about them and talks very highly of them. When one of them does not get into a MFA program you can tell that it affects him a great deal. He mentioned two in particular, Janet Pena and Alex Macias. Janet is top notch she should go anywhere she wants to and Alex that guy works and that is worth something. So ya in his mind…D

he only does for his name sake, the world doesent know he exists, god knows what world you are talking about, many mexican artists have made it big, that has absolutely nothing to do with it, get over it, I think better things would happen if he wasent around this area.

That is not true. He is a true person, with character to defend his honor and that of the his people. Mr. Gomez will always be remember as a true Heroe from Brownsville. You and us shall always respect and admire His labor. He is the chosen one with the courage to tear apart all this hatred and unite all of us. LONG LIVE MR. CARLOS GOMEZ!.

To Anonymous@10:22PM,

Regardless of whose purpose, Mr.Gómez has helped many students. He is not a Mexican artist, he is a Contemporary Chicano Painter, FYI ( for your info). Things would be better if you had decided to leave or if you would make things better around here. First thing you should do is learn correct English grammar, Mr. Gómez would be glad to even help you, if you were one of his students. You're just a whining little bitch of a guy, that's all!

Anonymous said...

he is a mexican racist artist, he is the source of hatred.

Anonymous said...

This is who he is, what can you say about yourself?

Born in Mexico D.F., Carlos G. Gómez found his first artistic expression in the “Tex – Mex” culture of the Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville where he was raised. “Brightly colored buildings and the surreal atmosphere of the Mexican border towns gave me the first appreciation of color, line, and the generalization that my chosen images would have to be bold and realistic," explains Gómez. He obtained his B.F.A. at Pan American University and attended Washington State University for his M.F.A. in painting and drawing. In the course of his studies he went, from an interest in Renaissance style art to a self ascribed “social-abstract-surrealism” and is currently exploring multi-technique painting and drawing.
He has received positive critical reviews from the media where he has presented
exhibitions. He was included in Arizona State University Hispanic Research Center
publications; Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art Work: Artist, Works, and
Education and CHICANO ART FOR OUR MILLENIUM.
Notable exhibitions include: The 24th exhibition of Painting and Sculpture held at Barnegat Light, New Jersey, which included monumental artist like: Ben Shahn, Leonardo Nierman, Betty Wesson, Samuel Rattner, and others. Other note worthy exhibitions he has participated in, include the 70th American Annual at Newport in Rhode Island, the Second National Jury Exhibition in Washington DC, The Latin Spirit of the 80's in Houston, the Art in Nature at the Museum of Natural History in Austin, Cara on Cara: Texas Faces in San Antonio, Tres Proyectos Latinos, Austin Museum of Art at Laguna Gloria curated by Benito Huerta, and the Eight Parkside National Small Print Exhibition held in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Other exhibitions of merit were Sister Cities Testing Boundaries Exhibition, El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso curated by Christian Gerstheimer, a three person show at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center curated by Kathy Vargas in San Antonio, “Chicana/o Art for our Millennium,” at the Mesa Southwest Museum in Phoenix, “Four from Brownsville” at the Kellogg Gallery at Cal Poly Tech in Pomona, California, “Dos Caras Del Sur de Tejas” Carlos G. Gómez and Cesar A. Martinez; at the Brownsville Historic Museum, group exhibitions in Fort Worth, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Wichita Kansas, Boise Idaho, and Norm Oklahoma, and several exhibitions in the Rio Grande Valley many of which were one man shows. Among them were “Provenance” at the Rio Grande Valley Museum in Harlingen Texas, “Pseudonym” at Richardson Art Gallery, “Serendipity” at STC in McAllen, Texas, “Presence” at La Pena Gallery in Austin, “The Human Condition” in Brownsville, “Orale” in Mexico, “Unplugged: Gómez on Paper”, The Chupacabra Chronicles Exposed, “Cadence” and “Unplugged: Gómez on Paper # 3” at the Art Center at Corpus Christi..
Carlos was also invited to “Monumental Idea in Miniature Book” an art international traveling exhibition and Ink and Clay 35 a juried exhibition at Cal Poly Tech Pomona California that featured artists from 14 western states.

Aside from exhibiting his work, Gómez is also a very active curator and has curated more than one hundred exhibitions.
Currently, he is a Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Brownsville, where he teaches a wide range of classes in painting and drawing.

Only one type of person would say something like that: a non- Mexican racist! So he complaints about non-representation and exclusion and voices his opinion. What is wrong with that? Most here have no concept of how they are viewed. I honestly think we need more Chicano Artist. Those who attended Tres might not have noticed that the majority of people there were Hispanics. Compare that to the MFA attendance. Gomez will be the first to tell that he is not a hero and that he really hasn’t accomplished much and that only time will tell what a man is worth. I agree with him. He once told me that he has a great deal of respect for people like Aguilar and Trevino because “they work their butts off to get their work out there. These two guys keep their nose to the brush and put out work. You have to love that about them.” Well anyway non-Mexican racist boo on you.

what; are you 14? go to any major museum in the US and read the names of the artist they have then come back to me. and it's not race we are talking about,it's ethnicity, but yes race too plays a role. why do you think the black and chicano movements ocurred - are still...

Anonymous said...

what are you 60? go to mexico and do the same whats your point?, you obvously havent been to the US museums, do you not see Diego Rivera there?, it sounds like you are old but not mature, got over it....I'll give you a clue support the new artists, you can call them chicana if it makes you feel better...

Anonymous said...

The point that is being made here is that there is a minuscule amount of Chicano artist in US museums. Diego Rivera is not Chicano. He is a Mexican painter. Second, Mexico on the other hand does have a great deal of foreign artist in their permanent collections and will promote the health of art by show casing quality art regardless of who made it which is not the case here. In 1997 artist curator Benito Huerta curated "Tres Proyectos Latinos," at Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin. His statement was that he noted a lack of Latinos (US Latinos) in the major collections and museums in the US. What he did was that he placed one single piece made by Jasper Johnson on one side of the Laguna Gloria Museum wall and a plethora of noted Latino artist from all over the US on the opposite. His point; we can hang with anyone. The exhibition received great reviews and opened much needed dialog.
I would encourage those who wish to visit the HRC database of artist to see Mr. Huerta’s point and see a bunch of great art being made by both old and young Chicano/Hispanic/Latino artist from all over if you have an interest as I do.
I read earlier a comment about Julian Schnabel and a bigoted remark. That proves the point some are trying to bring fourth. Schnabel did something so many wish they could achieve. Remember he lived here and hung around many of the streets we too walk on. To me he represents the ideology that anything is possible. Anyone down here can take it to the next level if they work hard. Most of us who do that just have to be patient and be smart enough to note when those opportunities come your way. We have a solid nucleus of very good and hungry artists in our area (Brownsville). Many of you might not know this but there is a loud noise coming out of S. Texas artistically. The efforts of Cande, Gabriel, Mauricio, Chuy, Lefler, Lorio, Sclight, Palmenez, and I am sure others are making this happen. Those of us who were raised here and the new arrivals to our city understand that things could be better artistically, but in time things will get better. I can bet money on it. Just work hard, if you already do that, then work harder. Not all places that have walls are worthy of showing your work. Be selective and think about how “that” show looks in your resume, but this is your decision. Keep your artwork in good shape. I have seen many pieces in shows with scratches and dinks. This says a lot about you and how professional you are. Keep photographing your work until it looks as good as the original. This is an area were many are weak. This is very important when curator send out calls. Define yourself as an artist and understand your work and stay on course as this in the long run will show maturity and help with your artistic identity. Work on your art IQ, we can never have enough knowledge. Don’t worry about showing old work. In another town where no one has seen your work, it is new to them. A perfect example is my colleague G. Lorio despite showing some of the old with the new his work always looks great in new environments. A good friend of mine C. Martinez just shows what he has at any given time regardless. So don’t get caught up in this.
I appreciate all the confirmatory and unenthusiastic comments. It is all good and thank god for the freedom of speech we have here in the good old US of A. We not only have good artists but we also have some smart anonymousness. …cgg

well said carlos,
but I still disagree on "crying about" it, I agree artists should do and keep doing, I feel very uncomfortable when artists say that "oh! they dont show my work because I'm chicano, black, green or whatever", by the way dont you think that statistically speeking chicanos are not very many and probably "not wanted" in the US espacially in mexico, therefor not in many museums, anyway... but again we shouldnt cry about...

exactly lets not cry about it, good for them...

Anonymous said...

It is not about crying, but instead to reveal a fault or deficiency. Most Chicano artists already understand the game of showing your work and all the politics associated with that scene. 40 years ago maybe that was the case and the civil rights movement clearly documents the despair of all who felt left out or abused by the social conditions that existed. Understand that many so called Chicanos are Chicanos by choice and that their politics have nothing to do with their art and vice versa. At this point and time things are a little complicated in many areas of the visual arts. Many years ago I ran across a report that there are over 10K Mexican Americans with MFA across the country, yet there are only 50 or so teaching in higher education in Texas and nationally the numbers don’t jive with the rest. So there is something wrong. What does it mean? As a young man in Houston, I walked into one of the top commercial galleries and I was greeted with a strong hand shake and a great color comment. See during the 80’s I still had my red hair and beard and if you have every met me know that I don’t fall into the stereotype. So the man asked me for my name, I told him. “What are you Spanish, Argentino”?, “No, I reply, I am from S. Texas; the valley” and you could see his whole jolly attitude change, a complete get out of my gallery type look and he said while looking down, “I am busy, go find a Mexican gallery”! Ok then what was that all about? I don’t know who you are, but chances are that one day, you will be turned away or overlooked because you’re a woman, Black, Hispanic, gay or something related. If you happen to be a Euro American, you too can go through this—the reversal. Statistically HRC recorded 194 artists of all ages. It is agreed that the efforts of the HRC documented only a fraction of artist despite all the hard work put into it. Many artists did not take the opportunity or they were simply missed. So there is a great deal of “Chicano” artists out there. Whether they identify themselves as such is another question. Note that in today’s society people as well as artists are categorized for tracking purposes. As for “not wanted”…that really depends on who it is that makes those calls. The big boys and girls in the Chicano scene are in high demand. Gronk out of California and Gomez-Pena are international and bring in a good income from just talking and giving workshops. But that has never really been the concern as most of us who keep an eye on things care more about the little guy, the guy who is just as good or better and deserves a shot. The word as far as Chicano art is concern is that it is myopic. It deals with a very narrow way of life and doesn’t have that universal connection. And of course I totally disagree. Chicanos are people too and because of that their work is also universal. The story they tell or the pictures they draw are from their view put, but it is about life and that makes it universal. Do you ever wonder why there is much bland and generic art out there? It has no culture, it represents nothing, it has no soul or heart. I don’t personally dislike that kind of art, but at least I know its origin and understand it in context to art in general. In Mexico as in other countries Chicano art is being looked at. Understand that it represents a movement against the “man” and if you have being paying attention to global news you can understand the attraction. We all want fairness. I saw in CNN a kid wearing a United Farm Works flag on his T- shirt….how cool is that. Well enough, got to go paint, but I will say this it is not crying, it’s more like a CSI investigation and Horacio does not like what he sees…cgg

Anonymous said...

fair enough, but you move on to the next venue, gallery etc., you said it yourself "not all places are going to be worthy of showing your work" and even if they put on a good face you'll never really know the real reason why you were turned down. you got to let it go its not healthy to share those kinds of stories, especially with a fresh mind(students), concentrate on the gift that was giving to you "ART"... politics exist everywhere whether you are black or white a plummer, electrician, even the president...the chicano term becomes irrelevant.... an artist's cause is above it all, no excuses,,with respect

According to WIKIPEDIA;

The following TERMS mean:

> CHICANO(A) / XICANO(A)=Is a word that derives from the Nahuatl(Uto-Aztec language) of Mesoamerica. Is a term originally used to describe outcasts of the Mexica (Aztec) Empire. The term began to be wisely used during the Chicano/a movement amongst mainly Mexican - Americans, but now, it expands to include all people who believein, and are in a struggle for self - determination of all Latino people. The term Chicano/a was originally used by,and in reference to United States citizens of Mexican descent.

> MEXICAN - AMERICAN = Are Americans of Mexican descent. most Mexican - Americans are biologically Mestizos.

> MESTIZOS = Is a Spanish term that was used in the Spanish Empire to refer to people of mixed European and Amerindian (Native Americans) ancestry
In Latin America. The term continues to be used today in the Americas.

> LATINO = In the United States, the term is in official use in the ethnonym Hispanic or Latino, defined as a "person" of Mexican, Cuban, Caribbean, Puerto Rican, Central and South American, or other Spanish culture in origin, regardless of race.

> HISPANIC = Is aterm related to Spain (Hispania - The Iberian Peninsula). Still more recently, the term is used to describe the people and cultures of countries conquered and ruled by Spain; All the Spanish-speaking Latin American Countries... Equatorial Guinea, The Philippines, Guam, and Northern Mariana Islands.

> TEJANO = (Spanish for "Texan", archaic spelling Texano) Is a term used to describe and identify a Texan of hispanic and / or Latin American descent.

> CHOLO = Is a term that has been applied to persons of mixed Amerindian and a Mestizo.

> POCHO = Is a slur -term to describe a Hispanic who is born and / or raised in the United States. The literal meaning of Pocho is "rotten fruit"... Recently, among some people, the term is use to express pride in having both; a Mexican and a U.S. American heritage.
The term is used abusively in Mexico to describe Mexican - Americans living in the U. S., who are thougth to be badly educated and without a " proper" sense of Mexican culture, having "forgotten" or "rejected" their Mexican heritage.
It is use specially for those Mexican - Americans that do not use/speak Spanish in a proper way, with a particular series of mistakes related to their English education. Some pochos speak a bastardized - hybrid English and Spanish slang (Spanglish).
They fault Pochos for using quasi- Spanish words (Pochismos word like: parkear, marketa, troka, etc....)
In GENERAL, the word "Pocho" can sometimes have these meanings:

= Is a person of Mexican heritage, who acts American ( a "wannabe" American).

=Is a Mexican - American who speaks little or not Spanish.

= Is an American(Anglo?) who speaks Spanish and acts Mexican ( a "wannabe" Mexican)

= Is a person who frecuently crosses the Mexican and U. S. borders and feels at home on both sides of the borders.

One time a man was walking along the beach and say another man fishing in the surf with a bait bucket beside him. As he drew closer, he saw that the bait bucket had no lid and had live crabs inside.
"Why don't you cover your bait bucket so the crabs won't escape?", he said.
"You don't understand.", the man replied, "If there is one crab in the bucket it would surely crawl out very quickly. However, when there are many crabs in the bucket, if one tries to crawl up the side, the others grab hold of it and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them."

So it is with people. If one tries to do something different, get better grades, improve herself, escape her environment, or dream big dreams, other people will try to drag her back down to share their fate.

Moral of the story: Ignore the crabs. Charge ahead and do what is right for you. It may not be easy and you may not succeed as much as you like, but you will NEVER share the same fate as those never try.
