TITLE: TWO FEMALES MEDIA:ACRYLIC ON WOOD DIMS:4X4

The Art of Brownsville

Art and Words by Gabriel Trevino

"I think it is important to put art in perspective and question the idea of what it means to those that produce it and those who seek it. It is easy to misunderstand art, to mislabel it, to accept it for the various reasons other than what it was originally intend it for. Art is vulnerable and dependant, an idea that needs from those that accept it."

MAURICIO SAENZ

Saludos

HISTORICAL HAPPY HOUR - HERITAGE MUSEUM

PRESS RELEASE

BROWNSVILLE, July 2010 -The Brownsville Historical Association invites you to relax after work on Friday, July 30, 2010 with Historical Happy Hour! This adult centered event give guests the chance to relax with a drink or two from 5:00pm to 7:00pm while visiting the museum after hours. The newly renovated Heritage Museum sports a working tap in the in-house Crixell Saloon. This program is adult only and is $10.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. Pre-registration is not needed, but is highly suggested!

This month's Happy Hour is generously sponsored by Jone Liquors of Brownsville, and we will have Texas brewed beers available to taste! In addition to this great mini tour of Texas, Ole Television will be on hand to film parts of Happy Hour for Ole TV, which airs Thursdays on Channel 23.

The original Crixell Saloon was located on Elizabeth and 12th Streets, in the heart of downtown Brownsville. The three brothers - Teofilo, Vincente, and Joseph (Jose) - were successful saloon owners and they eventually expanded to a second location across from Market Square, calling it the White Elephant Saloon. The brothers were involved in local politics, with Teofilo and Vincente both serving as City Commissioners. They continued to work in the saloon business until they were shut down by Prohibition in the 1920s. The recreated Saloon located in the museum is set in 1912 at the original Saloon - the same year Jose was shot and killed by political rivals.

The Brownsville Heritage Complex is located at 1325 E. Washington Street and is managed by the Brownsville Historical Association. For more information on BHA programs and exhibits please call 956-541-5560

Other Worlds by Oscar Alvarez at Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts

Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts presents "Other Worlds" by self taught local artist Oscar Alvarez. The show features works dating from early 2000 to works completed 2010 which sets the direction of the show of more of a 10yr retrospective. Oscar whom has been noted to have begun painting since 1999, has learned to dominate his pallet and surrealist style which has been said to have become reflective in his work. I think its exciting to see the work of a young artist in a venue as big as the BMFA, an opportunity which may allow the artist to reflect in his work at an early stage and perhaps a tool to be used as a stepping stone to greateness.
It was unfortunate that head curator Jenifer Cahn was said to have left the BMFA before the show openned perhaps changing the outcome of this art exhibit. "Other Worlds" was hosted by new assistant curator Laura Ochoa.
The show has a lot to offer everyone. Some works that are sure to take you beyond imagination perhaps the "other worlds" that exist in the brush of this talented artist.

CUATRO - JUNE-JULY 2010: Historic Brownsville Museum

"CUATRO" is an exhibition that represents four painters; Carlos G Gómez, Antonio Antinori, Jesus de la Rosa and Gabriel Trevino. Though very different, they each embody the spirit of free thinking and each has a linked unity which personifies the essence of contemporary art and its evolution.
The spirit of "CUATRO" is manifested in the belief that four make one,in this case, four painters make one thing: art.

Oscar Alvarez - July 14: 6 - 8pm

Oscar Alvarez
July 14 – September 11, 2010
Reception will be on Wednesday, July 14th, 6-8pm

"Its exciting to see the progress Oscar has made in his work. The first time I saw Oscars work , I think it was at the 2005 BMFA International art show back at the old building by the National Guard. I remember out of the hundreds of entries that were on the walls, his work for me stood out, I remember saying, that's something I would do, I really connected with it. I don't think I had met Oscar then.. It was at the Amigos Artistas first art in the Park and Galeria 409, when Oscars work started to evolve at least for me, I started noticing his paintings more and more. His work is surreal, complex, abstract, and at the same time erotic as it is morbid. Oscar is a great guy, an intellegent and sincere person, very noble, respectful and professional. I got a chance to meet him and got to know him through the several local exhibits he has participated and or attended. He is part of the local art community, a true painter who produces which is most important. Its exciting to see the BMFA supports the local growing talent, it truly is. I am looking forward to seeing this show as I know a lot of people are." gt

The Happy Hour Art Show at Hurricanes the bar...

"The Happy Hour Art Show "
Art by
Toni Hudson
Gabriel Trevino
Antonio Antinori
Art will be on display until June 5.
"I think its great to have opportunities to exhibit art in different settings where people interact. I don't think public Art becomes a background and overshadowed by the environment, as long as art exist in that setting it will find a way to communicate its values. Sure there's many other reason for public art like to keep it from simply being in storage, but it also shows how active the local art culture is..
As an artist you want to make art accessible to the public , so that people see your work, and perhaps buy it."
