Viva TAOB

Recently I have been ask to find a place that is willing to host the next "TAOB" The Art of Brownsville Blog Anniversary party "November 29, 2008"Saturday 7pm to 10pm. To make my task easier I decided to begin here at the TAOB blog. If you have a building or house "or other " here in Brownsville and would like to be the generous heroic host please send me an email to brownsvilleartform@yahoo.com and lets get talking. All you have to do is provide the place.

Also, local artists willing to donate small artwork preferably pencil sketches.."lets see who's got mad skill with the pencil "- but everything else is welcome too -a sketch-drawing, painting, ceramic etc.." for silent auction, send me an email to get this going.. Your art will be displayed here on TAOB...as auction. Money raised by silent auction will be use for The Art of Brownsville Blog, which will continue its support to the local art scene..

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Gallery 409 Update

Galeria 409 is open by appointment during the summer months. We will have a number of musical performances throughout the summer, including another Noche de Peña on June 17th at 7 PM. We'll continue to host Saturday night tango lessons and yoga classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30. The gallery will be undergoing some necessary maintenance, and work will continue on the 409 annex. We'll also be taking some much needed vacation time and working on banging together the schedule for next season's shows. We're hoping to present one man exhibitions by ..Oscar Alvarez, Cande Aguilar, Bret Lefler, Gerardo de Leon (Franchute) and David Freeman, as well as a couple of theme shows.

ATTENTION RGV ARTISTS: The next Galeria 409 OPEN SHOW is titled VIVA LA REVOLUCION and is open to all who submit work on the theme of the Mexican Revolution of 1911- 1921. All work must be framed and ready to hang or sit on a pedestal. We don't do glue, tape, staple or paint directly on the wall and nobody drives a nail in our brick walls period. We hang from wires. The exhibition is in conjunction with the Brownsville Historical Association and the Gorgas Foundation, who will both be hosting revolutionary exhibitions that open on the same night.

Artist Statement:

“The Black Life”

Death as a state of mind; just as a black life and its environment. Rather than just being conceived as the end of life, death derives in a variety of ideas and bursts out in mixed feelings that makes it a complex concept awaiting to be explored. A rare fascination and natural obsession has been the force that has drawn me to set a closer relationship with this theme. Death persists as a constant thought in my everyday life appealing both aesthetically and intellectually.

“The Black Life” is a collection including a series of coffin-shaped paintings, plus additional series of digital prints, installation, and video art evolving around diverse ideas on death. This collection is an introspective view on how the so-called end of a path proves to open up roads leading to discover rare beauty, reflection, irony and enigma within.

DOS

You are cordially invited to “DOS” an art exhibition featuring the work of Carlos G Gómez and Gabriel Trevino.

"DOS" is an exhibition that represents two painters; Carlos G Gómez and Gabriel Trevino. Though very different, they each embody the spirit of free thinking and each has a linked unity which personifies the essence of contemporary art and its evolution. Trevino's work will have samples that cover a ten year span, where Gómez will present a mixture of dated work.
The spirit of "DOS" is manifested in the belief that two make one,in this case, two painters make one thing: art.
