The Art of Brownsville - A time to reflect...

"Birth" by cgg
"To all the readers of The Art of Brownsville"
Many thanks for your support to The Art of Brownsville Blog. I think this year has been the greatest year so far for the blog, but more important for our community... Just looking at the archive it puts a smile on my face, it has been an already memorable year. I think I will step back for a month or so, perhaps so that we may reflect on what we have accomplished together. I am hoping we can start back up new, refreshed with new ideas for posts, and hopefully continue the dialogue with a more positive attitude for the fall...
There will be no more post until then, but I encourage you to continue your emails to
brownsvilleartform@yahoo.com . Comments will remain unavailable and will be reviewed once more so that it works for the best of all of us and not against us - meaning the art community as a whole.. I really want to thank everyone that has posted comments and has shared there ideas, opinions and or perspectives.
I have no intention of leaving TAOB but simply see it as taking a break..

I encourage TAOB readers to use this time to reflect and enjoy the archives of previous posts......

Best Regards,
Gabriel Trevino -

Much of my inspiration comes from personal experiences and memorable moments of my lifetime. As I am beginning a piece, I choose colors that personify my mood.
I don’t always know what will become of each brush stroke but instead I allow it to guide my creativity. Almost immediately, the eye focuses on shadow form developing a mirage that eventually comes to life.
I enjoy painting what I feel and feeling what I paint; the feeling of accomplishment is my addiction. I strive to do better and create art that will withstand the test of time.

PRESS RELEASE: Artist Statement: Samantha Isabel Garcia
The justification for my creation of art is the intrinsic necessity and the hungry that I felt at the time of grabbing a brush, a pencil, or any tool to start molding the feelings and thoughts that were inside me. Probably, this justification has been said by plenty of artists before me, but this does not take away the honesty of my words. The truth is that, after dedicating part of my studies to the social problems, to understand them and measure them, and to try to find the best solution for them, my body became a prisoner of these feelings of consternation and admiration towards a world and a society that behaves in strange forms that is far from the human logic. Thus, in order to free my body from this prison, I choose to do art.
One of my principal characteristics as an artist is the combination between sociology and art. I believe that, far from putting myself in disadvantage, the fact that I have dedicated my studies to both fields provides me with the tools needed to create a work of art with argument. My mind has been molded in such a way that, while I am working on piece of art, I am also trying to look for an answer to my concerns. Through this, I create a work of art that I consider suggestive; I can show the process of my analytical thinking about a topic, and, by sharing my pieces, I also share this process.
The strange ways in which society works have always caught my attention. I became restless over world famine, contamination, social and economic inequality, and inequality among genders. This last one has been my artistic focus for over a year. After studying diverse theories of feminism and the inequality among genders, my concerns about those issues have being constant in my work. Because of the lack of representation in society, women’s roles have been greatly depicted in my work. I believe that our roles in society have not been recognized yet. The social condition of women diverges between social contexts; in general terms, women are still victims of a system that has not let them develop entirely.
Women’s issues are not something simple, which is why I choose strong icons to depict my ideas: breasts are one of the main characteristics in my artwork. If I must summarize the meaning of the breast in my artwork, I would say that they represent each woman and the roles that they must develop in their lives. Each breast carries the capacity that each woman has to perform any role. A breast comes to provoke anyone who is looking at it and brings concepts that the individual forges for many years. For some, the breast will have sexual connotations; they might think about the sensuality and sexuality or just the body of a woman. For others, the icon will represent motherhood. I found these two forms of looking at the breast fascinating, because these two roles rule the lives of women. I admire motherhood, the capacity of a woman to bear a child, and the capacity of the body during this process. I am also fascinated by the sexuality of women, which has suffered multiple attempts at inhibiting it.
My materials and techniques always function to make my ideas come to life; I do not create any limitations for myself through my medium. If a painting, a sculpture, a drawing, and installation, or even a performance works for my ideology, I utilize it. The addictive process and physiological need that art became cannot conceive materials or techniques limitations. My art is the conjugation of concepts, processes, and the most visceral feelings transformed into something tangible. In this case, all the ideas that I have about women are represent by breasts. Each breast makes honor to women’s capacities; it recognizes its position and begs for a better future for women. It is direct; it plays with the taboos in people’s mind with the only purpose of proposing a better understanding of women.

PRESS RELEASE: BROWNSVILLE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

New Exhibitions at the BMFA
Opening ReceptionJuly 18 - 6-8 p.m.
David Freeman
Unstoppable Imagination of Information for Change

David Freeman plans to create a unique opening reception with an atmosphere inspired by the day-to-day activities experienced on an urban Mexican Plaza. Guests will be treated to the beverages and tasty treats sold from pushcarts by street vendors. They will be able to get a shoe shine and listen to the traditional music of roving mariachis. The Unstoppable Imagination of Information for Change theme of Freeman's exhibition allows the viewer to contrast the daily images encountered in south Texas and north Mexico with the disinformation prone media meglamania of 21st century satellite reception and towering transmitter stations aimed to manipulate our very thoughts and opinions. The artist makes a comment and you will enjoy visiting this dynamic and focused artist and discuss his theme.

Nancy Moyer
The Bicameral Face
Nancy Moyer's collection of digital portraits entitled The Bicameral Face is very intriguing and it will cause you to slowly ponder and reflect upon your own countenance. Creating Facillitator and Commander images of selected RGV citizens allows the viewer to contemplate the complex nature of personalities. You will find the digital art work conveys an illusion in unglamorous context that results in mental associations of one's self resulting in multiple self-discoveries.

UTB/TSC Photography Exhibition
P.A.W.S
Brad Doherty's photography students were assigned to engage their imagination to be inspired by man's best friend and to become creative photographing dogs. The result of this assignment is Paws: UTB/TSC Student Photography Exhibition. Over 100 black and white framed images will be displayed from July 18 through August 26. Many of the images delightfully engage the viewer with familiar canine expressions while other cause reflection upon man's inhumanity.

The Art of Brownsville Notes : Evil , Don't Buy Local Art.....

It makes me laugh, when I think about some of the things I have read recently on The Art of Brownsville. Some of the comments also make me think and wonder where they are coming from. It is without a doubt that The Art of Brownsville has attracted readers of all interests coming from around the valley and perhaps from throughout the United States as from around the world. Interests has varied from artists wanting to post there work and or post art events to comments: critics on posted artist work to critics on the artists themselves. Some of the comments have been positive and others well are simply posted to make a joke. Some have been hard to distinguish what the intention is and others have been posted without a clue as to whom has posted. For that I continue to moderate comments and conduct sweeps to get rid of the junk that's unneeded.
