The Art Review Part 2

"The Art of Living with Art" was I thought a great title for an exhibition that featured a small series of artwork by Eduardo Ibarra. In Eduardo's most standout art yet: a series of un stretched stand alone primed canvas, painted with the coloring of a bundle of flaming hot cheetos which were glued on to the canvas imitating vibrant strokes that resemble no image but evoke feeling and thought. The work is also signed flamboyantly below with oversize bold stick on letters across the canvas. To me this work is clever and a clear representation of art imitating art. This work truly challenges the viewer perspective as to what art is and what history and time has allowed it to be. The work is almost a parody of modern art and the myth movement of the end of the 2oth century artist in desperate attempt for their 15 minutes of fame. A movement that Eduardo might characterize as Egotism.

Dear Readers,

Commentary is greatly appreciated at The Art of Brownsville and we highly encourage dialogue between our readers in concern to art and culture. However, blatant attacks on individuals is something that is most inappropriate and against the mission of our blog, thus the removal of a recent post. While criticism is a part of the art world and something I think essential for artistic development, criticism of art should always be of a constructive and conducive nature.

If one is to critique, then CRITIQUE, but not from the recesses of any personal bias or agenda to hurt the artist. If you are going to critique then share your impressions based on a fair analysis of the artwork (and NOT the artist), use supporting references or observations if available and give feedback and suggestions if you feel compelled to do so. The artist or any of our readers may then feel free to respond and continue a dialogue if they desire to do so.

I am not saying that a reader should not feel comfortable with giving a negative critique. Readers are at most liberty to feel and think what they want and to share their impressions if appropriate...as long as the reasoning is within sound judgement. Without that, what substance does the criticism have and why would anyone want to contribute anything less?

It is obviously not true that commentary is appreciated or encouraged nothing can be further
from the truth. Innapropriate language was not even used,You should state the real mission
of your blog which is to censor any comment you don't agree with...you just didn't agree with my opinion
and you decided to censor my comments what kind of world do you live in. If you created a blog for people to express their opinions then you should respect their opinions I would expect that from a dictator but when you are asking for people to post their comments then respect
that. All I did was to give my personal opinion of his work. What you are doing is called censorship
anywhich way you look at it or try to glaze over it. I am very dissapointed with you and your staff.

"Fair analysis" what? If you don't agree with something you should be able to express it. Obviously
you don't know the definition of critisicm, It was never anything personal because in reality Eduardo was the one who created the work I am not going to crtique someone else for something he did or him for something somebody else did. The substance that a critique has without censorship is priceless ask anybody who lives in a socialist country or under a dictatorship isn't that what this nation stands for the belief in the freedom of free speech? anybody?

Mario, I appreciate your previous comment. When I read I laughed for a good while, I even showed it to my wife and she laughed too, but that's what it felt like every time I read it, a good joke. I just didn't see it appropriate accept for a good laugh...For that reason it was my decision to strike it out, but not because I don't like jokes, but I don't think TAOB has a section for that here yet. Maybe I miss understood you...and it was as serious as you could be, what can I say it happens. I like this other one you just posted, now that's serious and it should be read because you make a point . If you would of taken the same approach as you did this one, more than likely the other comment would of stayed. I am looking forward to hearing more feed back from you, if you are still up for it.

Gabriel who?

anyway...that's good that you laughed but it's no joke jack. Ok, let's look at it is as you say .....as been a joke or being funny, as far as I know being funny or a joke is not against the law...if that were true your paintings would be against the law, if being funny would be against the law, el chavo del ocho woulndn't be on the air, seinfeld would be arrested, the simpsons would be canceled, Saturday Night live would have never gone on the air and yet most of what they do is criticize important people like the president, do you think Eduardo Ibarra is more important than the preident what ? is he untouchable?
I've even seen some of your work because I have researched you guys to see if you have a leg to stand on when it comes to art or art criticism. I checked out your websites come on painting on cardboard Picasso did that like 60 years ago. Do you have a section
in TAOB for your bad paintings? Or a section for censored comments? The point is that anyway you look at it... you, or whoever took my comment off the page doesn't have a clue and lives in a dream world where everything is made of candy nobody criticizes anything or anybody, and everybody agrees with everybody.

I was up for it but are you up for putting this comment and the first comment I wrote about him on
your page? We will see. let's see if you are up for it. If you do that I will applaud you and all
the staff at TAOB.

thank you in advance.

Dear Mr. Escamilla,

You make some valid points in your response to my commentary.
But I have to disagree with your opinion that I removed your comment because I disagree with your opinion. Did I remove the comment made towards Cande Aguilar and Oscar Alvarez's artwork? No, what I disagreed with was what I felt was a hateful commentary.

Mr. Escamilla, the mission of this blog is to promote and support art and culture in our region. To motivate and inspire artists, advocates and art lovers alike to be active in and outside their communities (because we need more activism in our community!) and to show the world the creative and cultural riches to be found here (because we deserve more respect and exposure!). The blog's intent has always been to make a positive impact.

If by trying to protect the mission and intent of this blog by removing your commentary makes me the dictator of communist Candyland, then perhaps it is a fair judgement. Perhaps I made a mistake in censoring your comment and if I did, I am humble enough to see the error of my ways and want to learn from it. Also, I don't know why you brought my team members into this, it was I who deleted your comment.

I have reposted your commentary for the hopes of opening two dialogues on art criticism and censorship. Let's see how the readers respond. Let's learn from their thoughts and opinions on this matter. I am up for this and hope you are too. Readers, how about you?

Originally deleted post by Mario Escamilla:"Better yet they should call a show "The Art of Living without Eduardo Ibarra" That sounds like a better show. About the paintings standing alone I agree they should stand alone but at the bottom of the ocean. About him using the hot cheetos to create his artwork I thought that was a great idea, but rather than idea i think there was no other choice because from the looks of things he probably eats alot of hot cheetos, snickers, oreos, pancakes, and other tasty snacks. About it truly challenging the viewer i think the ony thing the work does is challenge us to keep our food down without throwing up. The work truly challenges the viwer to keep down their lunch. The only thing the work parodies is a not the myth movement but a bowel movement after eating acouple of burritos. An i wouldn't call it Egotism like eduardo calls it but badartism.
but who am I to judge.

"Mario Escamilla do you eat beans ? Judging by your comments, it sounds like you like to eat them a lot ". Does that sound like a mockery or a joke to you? It should, because it is and in my opinion is no different than your first post on comments. I live in no fantasy land, I live in Brownsville Texas, a city I am very proud of. I dont expect everyone to agree with me, or like my artwork, I doubt that everyone likes yours. The art review is based on my perspective of the artwork, my opinion based on my knowledge and or personal experience as an artist. Your first post on comments was in my opinion of a prejudice and slander intent nature, which I think has no place for it in TAOB for eating beans has nothing to do with the art review.

"Do I eat beans"? "Judging from my comments it sounds like i eat them alot" this is your comeback? good comeback chief...Not only can you ruin the art of painting, you also manage to ruin the art of being funny.

Belive me....I don't think you have to worry about people agreeing with you or liking your work because they don't.

Your perspective, your opinion is based on your knowledge? ..I have to agree it is your perspective and your opinion but it is so evident that you lack experience as an artist due to the fact that they are based on no credible knowledge.

Brownsville and Matamoros Rock I have to give you that one.

For the record I said you live in candyland not fantasyland but from the looks of things you moved from Ican'tpaintland to Ican'tcritiquetosavemylifeland and finally arriving at unfunnyland.

Something tells me that you once got a bad review for your art from Eduardo Ibarra and didn't like it, because I know Eduardo and he is one to say it like it is as per his point of view.. When you saw this Review I bet you said here my chance to lash back at him. Again, this isn't the place for that, understand it. My previous comment was not a come back, I am not playing a game, I am just standing up for what I believe. My previous comment was to state the point and reason "why your first comment has no place for at TAOB" , which that you don't seem to get. When you mentioned that "Eduardo likes to eat tasty snacks", your post lost its credibility, understand it, his eating habit has nothing to do in TAOB... Have you ever exhibited your artwork and where ? Have you ever sold a several paintings? Through your art have you ever inspired anyone? Has anyone ever said Mario your work is clever, and I believe you are a great painter ? Are you willing to post your art in TAOB if you are proud of your art and Brownsville and Matamoros like you say ? Don't turn this back on me , "just answer the questions and gain your credibility", or are you a fake ? Then live life as a fake and a joke......and stop your comments........

Please.....when it comes to criticism it only begins there, After a painting or any other form of art is completed. and as for your...bla bla bla bla comment, gee..very original... Listen I speak my mind if you don't agree with the way i am tough.. The art speaks for itself, I agree ....but so do i... you and your life are probably as boring as your comment.

Webmaster could you please get this “little missy” Mario Escamilla out of our lives--please? There is no problem with one expressing his or hers opinion. It is healthy and has benefit in our field. But this is no longer about art and well intended criticism. The fact that we all have a mouth should not be the sole excuse for its utilization. Having one and using one carry responsibility. In this case:
• Mario revealed his point—I can buy that.
• Made his social commentaries—he did not like counter feedback.
• Revealed his lack of understanding of the English language—must be a high “schooler”.
• Or as one writer wrote—blab, blab, blab—and continues to use bad grammar.
• Not to mention his constant personal attacks on people who disagree with him which is the whole point of his “bitch”—“Listen I speak my mind if you don't agree with the way i am tough”—what is this?
So do us a favor.

Even though I criticized eduardo Ibarra I have to say he is way more creative. He is on a completely different level and his work also speaks more to the visual language than many artists working here in the valley or anywhere else for that matter jesus de la rosa is a nobody es un cero a la izquierda....cheeeto... man please. there was a previous comment which said that I was jealous or had recieved a bad critique from eduardo well not quite but i did get to talk to him
and i thought he would enjoy the critique I gave him. haven't heard from him if he's out there let me know what you think.

jesus de la rosa's work is not even worth taking the time to critique gabriel trevino's work is better than de la rosa's work it is more creative as well. de la rosas style is so old the only way to find out what style it is is to carbon date it
i saw the link to the supposed cheeto man....it has nothing to do with what eduardo is doing...that guy is just eating cheetos in some type of performance it has nothing to do with painting or art for that matter. It is more theater than fine art.

i would like to comment on anonymous... "little missy" what was that..

2. anonymous couldn't argue his way out of a paper bag
3. anonymous revealed he understands the english language....but lacks any knowledge of the visual language
4. anonymous spell check this.... You don't know anything about art or art criticism.
5. Or as your your breath would say I stink
6. not to mention you are doing the same thing I'm doing, disagreeing with someone you don't agree with whichis my whole point.

Dear Mr. Mario Escamilla,

You have made some very blatant comments about my work and myself without supporting facts. I don’t know your work. I have never heard of you or ever met you and never made a comment about your person in this public forum.

Gabriel Trevino challenged you in a pervious post.. “Have you ever exhibited your artwork and where? Have you ever sold a several paintings? Through your art have you ever inspired anyone? Has anyone ever said Mario your work is clever, and I believe you are a great painter? Are you willing to post your art in TAOB if you are proud of your art and Brownsville and Matamoros like you say? Don't turn this back on me, "just answer the questions and gain your credibility", or are you a fake? Then live life as a fake and a joke......and stop your comments........ “

You have not responded to his dare.

I want to extend this challenge. I challenge you to an open public critique. I live in McAllen as well, so our meeting will be easy to arrange.

Dear Mr De La Rosa

Yes i have made comments about your work and my supporting fact is your work.

You don't know my work but hopefully that will change in the future.... i will be sending work To Gabriel the one who made the challenge. to answer some of the questions yes i have exhibited,
Have i sold a painting? yes. Have I ever inspired anyone? i don't know. has anyone said Mario you are clever? They have said i make funny comments. Am I willing to post my work in TAOB? yes I am willing to do that. Have I gained my credibility I guess so because all I had to do was answer the questions....

About Your extended challenge I don't have time for that right now but when i post my work on TAOB you and everyone else are more than welcome to critique my work that's if they are willing to post the work.
