Abstract:
Artworks of monumental physical scale are overwhelming. The diminutive viewer is
confronted and consumed by the gigantic. Presented with the miniature, the viewer, no
longer assigned to the passive role, could instead devour the work, taking it into his or her
soul. The miniature invites the viewer into a personal and intimate relationship. With
attention drawn to the significance of the seemingly insignificant, the momentousness of
the miniscule is magnified thus instilling monumental value. This curated exhibition will
investigate the power of small-scale artists’ books to challenge their readers with grand,
powerful, urgent, and poignant content. We sent out invitations to the national and international
art community, asking artists to create miniature books for the SGC Conference.
We reached out to graphic designers, sculptors, writers, artists, printmakers, kids and the
community to present their ideas in miniature book formats. This is an intimate, economical,
democratic and global exchange project. Because the project is lightweight and
easy to install we are in the process of organizing an exhibition to travel to Spain, China,
Argentina, and Finland after the SGC Conference 2009. We are asking artists to produce 6+
editions, which will allow us conducting the traveling exhibition simultaneously.

So how is CGG invited if it is a call for entries? Unless he has the inside scoop which is not fair for all the other artist paying a fee.

I was invited, paid the fee, submitted the work and got in. There was a call within the printmaking circle which I am no longer a part of, but via the invitation, my interest was reawaken. I honestly don’t know if it was a juried show or not. I just followed the instructions that were sent to me. Note that Hui-Chu is an Associate Professor in Printmaking and a woman and not a “he”! By now most already know that the field of art is not fair. There too many good artists in our area who are not given the opportunity to present their artwork and do not get respect. But in a way we shoot ourselves in the foot by not working together and on many occasions bad mouthing. I would like and encourage those of you who live the dream to work together and create a data base of Brownsville artists. Those interested please submit a simple digital portfolio with a bio, resume, artist statement and at least 10 high quality jpegs. I do curate and have contacts with outside groups who have an interest in Brownsville art/artist. I have no political ties or hidden agendas. To me it is all good and we all deserve a shot at it….art is that big. By the way did anybody catch the 60 Minutes interview of Julian Schnabel…he rules…cgg Sent stuff to:
