This is not my blog, this is our blog,..........The blog has always had validity, and has always been a venue for discussion, well since I have been here, it was only until recently, anonymous comments have been abused by one or two persons, but this has happen before.....no big deal..

Omar, when are you going to add more artists to the Manichaus list ? or does the website imply there is only four artist in Mcallen and or the valley, including yourself ?

How are we to prosper....

I got a list for you of painters if you needed it, let me know....Lets start with the work of Celeste de Luna... I like to see her work at your place....

Gabriel,
The ManicHaus website has an Artist section that includes artists that have exhibited in the gallery. It needs updating but does list more than 4 artists. You can see the link here:

http://manichaus.com/wp/?cat=7

Why would your first conclusion be that ManicHaus is exclusive in our definition of Valley artists? If you want an answer to your own rhetorical question "How are we to prosper," then maybe the answer is: you shouldn't go around making those kind of assumptions. It's a very conflict theorist approach to inter-gallery relations.

It is also not the policy of ManicHaus, Modern Art Space, to discuss possible future shows in public nor do we have a curatorial process that scores based on public opinion. I meet a lot of people and have a tendency to forget names. Have you visited ManicHaus yet?

I'm usually a more polite person, but I'm not quite sure where you are going with your above statements. We've presented 17 monthly exhibits and are constantly doing research for future shows.

I'd appreciate an explanation on your post.

Thank you very much,
Omar I. Rodriguez

Listen to your first comment, for your explanation.
I also like how you signed your first comment...Your name, your gallery, followed by Mcallen, Texas.. what is the true purpose of that?, thats like a cop and a badge , don't say nothing to me or I won't exhibit your work at the gallery ?
Modern art broke away from formality, seems all you have now are polocies...
I prefer some anonymous comments, atleast they were truthful..

How are we to prosper....with "truth"..

Put that in the data that you gather...

the blackest rabbit said...

Thank you for your "explanation," even though you didn't answer any of my questions.

It seems like you have a lot of negative feelings about ManicHaus and I don't know where these come from. Do you take offense that I mention where the gallery is located "McAllen, Texas"? You seem okay with stating that you are:
". . . one of the most important painters of my generation,( . . . ) The fact that I was born and raised on the border: Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros Tamp. Mexico makes me even more important."

Are you stating that art is more important if it comes from Brownsville and Matamoros? Explain this please, because I don't understand your logic. Why can you make a statement like that and I can't simply state where ManicHaus is located?

I'm here to discuss Art and so far you've only stated insinuations to the purpose of ManicHaus and have been critical. If this is your idea of Art discussion: not answering questions and not giving constructive criticism, then I have no time to waste on what amounts to territorial pissings. It's a disservice to our area artists and does nothing to inspire patrons to support artists.

You've not visited ManicHaus and it seems like you are getting information second hand on what our gallery is about. Until you realize what it's like to run an independent gallery, i don't think you have an educated notion to allow you to make such derogatory assumptions.

Exciting things are happening in McAllen with the art community. We've exhibited several artists both seasoned and novice. We are open to feedback, but we respect the feedback we received from artists, patrons and visitors who have seen for themselves what we are doing. We've gotten a lot of support and we're grateful for that. I would have thought you'd be happy and supportive that a new independent, artist-run gallery has opened up in the Valley and has actually survived 1 year.

Seems like you are just out doing PR for Manichaus...that is you true purpose, which is ok, but "live the truth"..

You can simply send emails to: brownsvilleartform@yahoo.com
put up any press releases about any of Manichaus shows , the artist and or work you exhibit, a link to your website and or pictures of your place. Thats what this blog is all about.,,You could probably encourage possibly more TAOB readers to go out there and visit with you guys..

The press releases that I have post up on TAOB ,sadly I have gotten are second hand, because you guys don't send anything....

But yet there you are posting comments here on TAOB..

and now........

Like I said before, "this blog has always had validity", you are not listening to what you wrote first...." TAOB has always been about sharing ideas..
The Art of Brownsville is going on its 6YEARS of doing what it does...and you want to say "NOW IT HAS VALIDITY"...

Like I said you are just doing PR, you figure with all the comments and hits "The Art of Brownsville" has been getting, you now show interest......

I ask that you do this...PUT UP A SIGN IN THE FRONT DOOR OF MANICHAUS THAT SAIS - "WE SUPPORT THE ART OF BROWNSVILLE BLOG - www.brownsvilleart.blogspot.com "..
TAKE A PICTURE AND SEND IT TO POST HERE...

Then we can start talking ABOUT SHARING, if that is truly what you want...

Gabriel,

Of course the Art of Brownsville blog has validity, but there is a misunderstanding here. I don't think Omar is saying that the blog has never been valid until this point. I know that Omar is referring to anonymous comments made in any blog as not being valid and I agree with this. People shouldn't steal other's identity, and that is what was happening in the most recent posts.

You are accusing Omar of self PR. Who is not guilty of that? You also say this is "our" blog, but how come only your show gets an Ad at the very top. I sent you the information for UTOPIA and you didn't even mention the exhibition on the blog. I do appreciate the posts for the other information that I sent you.

the blackest rabbit said...

It was a misunderstanding. Now that the anonymous postings are gone, I feel more encouraged to post. I work full time and then work at ManicHaus another 4 hours or so each day, so I never get a chance to get out to Brownsville, much less the openings in the McAllen area.

It's a sad fact of life that the Lower Rio Grande Valley is separate from the Upper Rio Grande Valley and there's not much exchange.

Maybe, it would help to not jump to conclusions.

I will add you to my media list of emails and I hope you send me your press releases as well. Even though I don't run a blog, I can help with some promotion.

Please, note that I have added TAOB link to the Manichaus site:

http://manichaus.com/wp/?page_id=27

Hope to see you in the McAllen area.

To start off Omar needs to get off his high horse..Thats what he needs to do...just because he runs a so called gallery doesn{t give him the right to think hes any better..The Manichaus..please... I would say its more like The Outhouse with all that stuff thats in there.

and to reply to your response to my critique of wedgeworths art

I have to disagree with your perception as to what his art is searching for...there is no beginning and no end to that stuff(type of work)...It is taken in a very conscuious manner from some book he saw, artnews or art in america magazine...or some slide he was shown in art history class....One has to fight the urge and instinct to copy or to do what makes us feel good or safe we are hardwired to do that...and by the looks of it he lost the fight 2 seconds into the first round..The work might look pretty to the untrained eye but to someone who knows about art ...Im sorry but they are an eyesore...does the work challenge...no.. as far as inspiration.. just because you said it was inspired by the moon and the sun..excuse me but that does not help it or make it any better.

Tell me whats new about the work?...pinpopint what is new in the work please..

good day

mario

Sorry Mario, but I'll respond to constructive crit anytime, just formulate some. If you don't like ManicHaus, then that's ok. Starting out with an ad hominem really doesn't help your response to my crit of Brian Wedgworth's art.

What's new about the Wedgworth's work? It's being produced in our backyard and he's selling and getting people excited about art . . . moreover, he's challenging himself and following through on his vision. If you don't like it, that's ok. It's not going to change the course of his career or my opinion of his work.

Please, list the exhibitions you have been to at ManicHaus, so I know what "stuff" you don't like.

While you are waiting to pounce on another blog comment, I'm going to be busy creating, exhibiting and selling artwork and helping local artists get a foothold in the Art World. Get yourself a comfy chair and a 44 ounce soda. We'll give you plenty of things to complain about.

Have a wonderful day!

You know what, Mario?
I'm really not trying to be a jerk or anything.

Are you an artist?
If you are, having a negative attitude really won't help you out much. You'll end up reaping what you sow. You should try to network and get to know people and galleries and find some good things to say about work, even if you don't like it at all. It's Art, it's pretty subjective.

If you have a hard time talking and networking, find someone to be your agent and do all the smiling and handshaking while you concentrate on your work.

I'm really trying to be constructive and not cast you off like a naysayer. Ultimately, the choice is yours.

I thought "around and back" didn't look good at the 409, when I went to see it and Brian was there I actually thought the sculptures were scattered about the place and he was there to pick them up,..I didn't feel the raw iron was complimented by the scraped brick wall nor the wood floors..
I did think over all the work was good, both surreal and cubist, but very minimilist. Some one mention a while back "he is like a painter", I would question that, does he really know how to paint, and perhaps does he have any noteable paintings? I would like to see him do both.
The way I see it painting, sculpting is the same thing, different media..
Can he do both ?

mario escamilla said...

hominem please...thats your rebutle wedgeworth is nothing more than thomas kinkaide as a sculptor....His artwork is as significant as kinkaides work is to painting its sorry to see that a person that is probably educated with your himinems and all that you can't see that

as for your argument that it being produced in our own backyard makes it new...sorry that does not make it new or good at all...and just because it might sell...Thomas Kinkaid makes millions off his paintings...but do they contribute to the continuation of art no. they are just pretty things and thats it..Im not here to change your mind or wedgeworth's mind..it's your loss if you don't take my advise... don't ride the superficial(easy) art road thats all I have to say. your problem is that you don't know enough about art..you need to see more work meet real artists not these bubble gum machine artists...

mario escamilla said...

Am I an artist yes I am I am also a critic

listen I don't need your help or any help from those cheezy mcallen galleries.
,.listen if you like to be a fake and do all that ....hey that's your thing it won't make your work any better or your knowledge of art more expansive

for the record Im being constructive...you just don't know it or can't see it..ask some of your professor to tell you the real truth...they will tell you the same thing I'm telling you..if you can't see the positives in my negatives then that's too bad..like i said get out more see more art at meet real artists.

have a nice day

Hi guys, I would like to add that i don't care for Artwalk overall, although as Jesus De La Rosa has mentioned commercial business is necessary and not a bad thing. I would also like to add that Manichaus is one of my favorite venues on Artwalk. And although I appreciate your recommending me Gaby, I don't think my artwork would fit in with what Manichaus is going for and that is ok. Many galleries tend to choose work that have commonalities and follow that theme. My work is political and cultural and is not for everyone and I don't have a problem with that. Tu saaabes...

Hi Celeste,
I'm really glad you can see what we're focusing on at ManicHaus and compare that to what you want to focus on with your art.
You've done your homework and visited the gallery and seen the space and the atmosphere.
Many artists and some from the Valley jump at any chance to show the same work over and over again at any venue, without taking a moment to think how their work will be received or if it's the right match.
We've had strong shows and weak ones and it's not necessarily the artists' fault, we take the blame, but we're learning as we go (just like parents with a new baby).
Thank you for the kind words and feel free to chat whenever you are in town.
Congrats on the job, too!
