Actually, anonymous, this center is run by about 30 artists that were formally with the Brownsville Art League. They approached Brownsville Historical Association with the need for space because the Neale House was sold and they felt their needs were not being met, and they also felt they were not being listened to.

Because BHA has the lease on the entire Market Square building and will occupy it all once the new BUS terminal is built, BHA had the extra space available for the group. BHA provided its own $$ to fix the space for the group.

They have called the space the Art and Cultural Center of Brownsville, and it is not managed by the Brownsville Historical Association nor by me personally. I have a dedicated staff and board who manage everything together and we work as a team.

It certainly has nothing to do with my close buddies either, though I will say that some of my closest buddies run museums and cultural centers throughout the state of Texas (and some in other states).

I do not know what being from McAllen has anything to do with anything either. In my opinion, part of what keeps Brownsville lagging behind McAllen is the distrust of outsiders, and the crab mentality where anyone that tries to do anything positive is quickly criticized and brought down. It is unfortunate because I firmly believe that Brownsville has much more to offer in cultural resources than any town in the RGV.

I believe the group of artists at the Art and Cultural Center of Brownsville offer open membership with dues, and they share studio space at Market Square. BHA does not take a commission on the sale of the work, commission on memberships, or percentage of workshops held. In exchange for the use of the space, the artists agree to run the Market Square gallery that houses the Edelstein collection for the BHA on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If you have any questions about what BHA does or does not run, please do not hesitate to contact BHA at 956-541-5560. Any one of the staff members would be happy to answer questions.
