In many and most American Universities, some academics discourage career adviceat the college level; believing that students should be sheltered from real - life survival issues while in school. But many fine - arts faculty members are opposed to career development courses for selfish and self- serving reasons: they are aware that today's students- artists will become tomorrow's practicing artists/ painters, and eventually artists with whom they will compete for gallery, museum, and press attention, so there is much resistance to imparing any sort of information that could possibly give these future peers a career edge or jeopardize their own pecking order in the art world.

What is your point in reference to Garza's artwork?

hmmm. seems like somebody had a rough experience while in college. Professors don't have much to do with our "pecking order in the art world". Successful careers in art are determined by the individual's belief and their desire to succeed. As a matter of fact, college has little to do with giving an artist a "career edge". You've either got it or you don't. It all depends on NOT how far the artists wants to take it but Where the artist wants to take it. Personal satisfaction should be the artist's goal. If you're not successful doing what you're doing then get the hell out but don't blame others for your failures.

In the early 1960's a friend of mine lost approximately 150 paintings in court. He gave his work to a Washington, D.C., gallery owner on consignment without a receipt or any form of written agreement.

Why ?

If you look at the BMFA history which has shown the work of several local professors from the valley, and galleries in the local colleges, you got professors pretty much doing local shows year round.
It is perhaps a very small percentage of students that after graduating follow up to produce local shows. But that is just reasoning with the idea that some study art to teach as a simple means to have a job, and others that want to be a productive artist.

to why: because that is the way itsometimes is. if an artist is not alert and does not take art as a business you will some some art along way, keep a record and make a contract. if they don't want one, don't show there.

To AOB. I say do both, don't give up the dream. showing locally is very limited. look for other places to show.

That's a great and excellent advise, Thanks and it's time to move on. Remember: NEVER GIVE UP!!!

In addition to private and corporate clients, there is a wide range of commission and sales opportunities available to artists / painters througth public art programs sponsored by municipal, state and federal agencies and independent organizations.

The artist / painter watched in excruciating pain, but didn't say a word. When the dealer finished His Cigar and Dropping his hashes on him, and the art History lecture, the artist collected his slides and left the gallery. But He was so devastated by the symbolism of the ashes on his work that he put himself to bed for 3 and a half days.
Regardless of whether the droping of the ashes was sadistic or inadvernt carelesness, the question remains, Why didn't the artist say something ? for example, " Excuse me, but you are dropping ashes on my slides and hands. What a Tex-Mex Border Guy!!!
One wonders: if the dealer had been pressing his foot on his toe, would he had alowed him to continue? When the art dealer said that his work was " too femenine and Folkish " . He should have immediately left the gallery [ with a curt " Thank You for your time"] or stayed to challenge his idiotic statement.

The artist /painter was or is too sensitive. I have often seen artist friends make this mistake. They take the idea of beign a sensitive emotionally unbalanced artist to far. One needs to have certain sensitive characteristics as an artist but we can't be as emotionally unstable as a thirteen year old girl (I would like to clearify that not all thirteen year old girls are emotionally unstable). He should have challenged the statement. "Too Femenine and Folkish" well same thing could be said of Marc Chagall he should have responded.
He should also consider switching to digital images on CD.

Keep in mind that it takes an artist / painter, fifty or more Gallery / Museum an presentation packages of the same body of work to generate one positive response. A number less than fifty does not even begin to approach an effective market prenetation level that justifies any sense of defeat or rejection.
Each time you receive a letter of rejection, initiate a new contract. send out another presentation package, or pick up the phone. This process of character/ agressiveness / personality increases the odds of acceptance and keeps your Psyche in a great Productive shape.

Before committing to a consignment and / or exhibition relationship with a gallery or art dealer, request a contract. If the dealer is UNwilling to use CONTRACT, do not get involved. If a dealer provides you with a contract that he or she has prepared, compare it with one of the samples contracts referrred to in the section of Art " LAW ; Contracts and Business Forms." If necessary, amend the dealer's contract to include any important provisions that are missing.
If you have succesfully negotiated a contract bit are unfamiliar with a gallery's business reputation, talk to other artists / painters represented by that gallery.
