Paintings by Gabriel Trevino

"I am still humbled by the idea of painting...perhaps mostly by what surrounds it. Painting by nature is power, in some cases a power that unites and separates." GT

The portrait of a man with rain clouds reminds me of Noel Palmenez work from when I was at UTPA (many years ago) with him.

This art is possibly out of even the range of naive painting, that Henri Rousseau contributed marvelous pieces too, but then they probably haven't heard of Henri Rousseau. Like Cande Aguilar had not heard of Picasso as he so proudly boasted a few years back. You see, the lack of training in artist should not be coupled with the unwillingness to stare something squarely in the face and say it sucks. It is a cruel reminder that people paint for paintings sake, without acknowledging that "ART" is a weapon and not a decorative asthetic piece of garbage, there is a necessary violence to painting. Violence which opens the door to something else. There is an interesting anecdote about Francis Bacon and a painting he had discarded. It is said he later spotted the painting or piece of it, which had been neatly trimmed and framed and hung in a gallery. He went inside and asked for the price of said painting, he was told the painting was selling for 50,000.00. WRITING OUT A CHECK WITHOUT A MOMENTS PAUSE, he carried the picture outside, WHERE HE PROCEEDED TO STAMP IT TO DEATH ON THE PAVEMENT!!!! Let's call "crap" crap and art is a like a heroin addiction, not for the well kept or pretentious Starbucks customers who get their morning java, after having slept comfortably on a fluffy pillow. Some of us still remember Modigliani, Gaughan, Soutine, Van Gogh, Duchamp, Ernst, Chirico, Klee, Davis, Sheeler, Balthus, Siqueiros, Pollock, Bacon, Guston, etc. etc....some of us still remember what Picasso so dogedly stated, "ART IS A WEAPON!"

" ART IS A WEAPON " - yes, but do people really want to see it that way... must local art exhibits are seen as just another entertainment event where you just go there to get free goodies - government cheese and some red wino --- so typical of our local dependency of government hand - downs. This is their " WEAPON "; Anything for
" FREE " !!!!!!!
