Biography:
Angel examines the dehumanization of people through the marketing and “spin” that we are subjected to in our everyday lives. His digital images and mixed media installations blur the lines of what are acceptable societal norms and capitalize on global warming, natural disasters, immigration, financial disarray, terrorism, and war as money making opportunities in a commercial-centric society. In an era where the masses are looked upon as “consumers” rather than citizens, he has discovered that the best way to skirt laws is to redefine them. His work exploits commercialism and industrial design, placing these issues in an appetizing “product” package for the masses in a disturbingly consumable and uncomfortably familiar format. The reason for this is to not only to heighten awareness of the subject matter, but to begin conversation where most would rather be entertained from a distance. The creation and engineering of this “merchandise” is not just an artistic presentation: it is an invitation to incorporate the viewer and make them a larger part of the work itself, creating an interactive experience that merges a passion for the arts with the social and political concerns of today.

Viewing everything as an artistic resource, Angel utilizes this in all of his creations. From the extensive experience with a variety of mediums and styles, to the intangibles, such as upbringing and ideas, his work grows and expands with the requirements presented from each new art piece. The artwork’s concept ultimately dictates the medium needed for its creation, so artistic evolution is intrinsic in his philosophy.

Cabrales received his BFA in sculpture from Arizona State University and his MFA in sculpture from the University of North Texas. He has shown work consistently for over ten years including shows in major cities such as Santa Fe, New York, Dallas, El Paso, and Phoenix. In addition to being the Lead Assistant to fellow public artist Thomas Strich, Angel also taught art to junior high and high school students in the Mesa School District in Arizona and was an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas and Tarrant County College Southeast. He exhibited in an international show with work by two Rotterdam architecture-design firms: Atelier Van Lieshout and MVRDV and Amsterdam arts think tank, Dadara at the Centraltrak in Dallas, TX and his public art piece in Dallas is located at the L.A.R.C. Inc. Building. Other selected shows include the ‘Hecho in Dallas’ show at the Latino Cultural Center, the ‘Wish! Auction’ at the Dallas Contemporary, and the ‘Expo at the 500X’ gallery in Dallas, TX.
He is currently a visiting lecturer at UTB Sculpture Dept. and has an upcoming solo show at the Arizona Latino Arts Center in Phoenix.
