BMFA -CANDE

BMFA to rock the art scene with a new exhibition by local artist Cande Aguilar. The exhibition titled "VIVO MAS" tributes Cande's 10yrs of producing art and is set to open with a preview show reception 'THURSDAY 01/17 @"$25 per big wig" and again 'FRIDAY1/18 with another opening night @ no cost for the general public.

This is somewhat an exciting event to see the BMFA come true to there word and promote local talent in the new BMFA building. Not that the idea was in doubt, but I do hope to see many more of these type of one man shows for there are many other local artist well deserving this type of opportunity. So, never hurts to be prepared my fellow artistas.. I encourage everyone to put there big wig on and support Cande's 10yr accomplishment as an artist and join him at the new BMFA....

Carlos G. Gomez should have a show at the BMFA.

What would be the difference between Gomez exhibiting at UTB Gallery and BMFA ?

Mostly Context.

University galleries are academic spaces dedicated and catering to the education and research of its students. Even if the space is open to the general public, for the most part they do not visit a university gallery specifically to see an art exhibition. The audience that will see the artwork is limited.

On the other hand, museums specially dedicated to the exhibition of Fine Arts are venues governed by the city dedicated to the general pubic for this reason become more accessible for visits. In turn a larger part of the Brownsville community is acknowledging the work of the artist.

Even if the general public would attempt to visit an exhibition at the Rusteberg Gallery, they would probably be fined for not having a U.T.B. parking permit. I feel that Carlos Gómez's work should definately be showcased at a more widely accesible gallery. However, the real question remains. Is the BMFA capable of handling real art?

I totally, agree with you on the parking ticket situation. This is a problem that should be address to the University Police. It was address at STC and now the security guards are made aware of art openings in advance and they don’t give out any citations between art opening hours.

I have no doubt that whatever is shown at the BMFA is “real” art as apposed to “fake art”. The BMFA is a venue specifically dedicated to exhibiting art. Any object that is placed in the context of art and this type of venue by a curator is art. Whether it is good or bad is something to be discussed and is a question that should be directed specifically to the curator. Curators exercise their power by presenting an audience with an exhibition and by doing so; the curator is saying that the work selected is relevant and important. We need to ask the curator why the exhibition is significant and the curator needs to justify it through an essay and public discussion/lecture of the work.

It's a shame that a lot of good art gets rejected because Brownsville is still too conservative. Especially at the BMFA. Not even Michelangelo's, David would have a chance there.

Whether art is good or bad is definately something to be discussed. It's what artists do and it's called critiquing. Just because a curator has chosen specific art to be exhibited doesn't mean that the artwork is exempt from some healthy criticism.

Yeah, I agree. Critiques are essential to the growth of an artist.

I think Cande really put himself on the map with this exhibit. I do feel he worked hard and his art made it justice. The exhibit is really good, go check it out. I do feel in some ways, well what happen to seniority and question whether a Gomez exhibit should of come first, but when will they set the dates, or is there any rumors that he will ? Or are they not willing to offer the prestige openning like the Ray Smith ? Will we ever know??, I just always assumed Gomez does his own thing at the UTB Gallery, its his art he does whatever he wants with it, I know I do... By the way it was me who asked what is the difference. It seems clear that there is a big difference..

in brownsville and the way things are done, yes there is a dfference. it is not about who, but why, and by whom, and for what purpose. gomez has always been seen as a mexican, he is mexican, but he has done so much for the valley and has more then often has carried the torch for all down here. look at his resume, 30 pages! who s ray smith?

Gomez is a good artist, maybe even a great artist, but he's a diva, sexist, and difficult to work with. So although he may not be showing at BMFA for political reasons, it may not be for the ones you think. I'm thrilled ray smith was shown in brownsville, he's a good artist, and I heard of him five years ago when I saw his work in the San Antonio Museum of Art. It's part of the permanent collection of their Latin American collection. Besides, if gomez is that good, he'll get more venues regardless,in and out of brownsville, unless of course, his big cabezon gets in the way.

But I heard from several people that not many people showed up to Cande's exhibit at the BMFA, not for the free night, nor for the paid night. for whatever reason, whether its ray smith or a local artist, not many people see the artwork at bmfa.

Why are you all so concerned about me? Cande works hard and got a gig at the BMFA...good for him...he deserves it...that is what hard work does. There are but two people in this area who really know me and know what I am trying to accomplish with my art and what my personl goals are. So those of you who like to talk about people with anonymous as a name...don't do it especially when it is about people you don't know.....gomez

.....gooble, all art is real even monkeys know that....go have a chat with jennifer cahn she will guide you through your difficulty in seeing. hey, you might be color blind. you should get checked....one word "history".....CANDE

Anonymous said...

Gooble is right! Monkeys don't know anything--they are monkeys. Who is Jennifer Cahn? What Gooble meant is the validity of art and its evolution. Get this, anybody can do art, but very few people can make profound and valid art that contributes to its history and that inspires others to create. One thing sure, a monkey can create a type of art, but so do elephants, dogs, etc.

All art is real as cande says but,….. not all art is good or significant in anyway to “history” as cande says or as his work clearly shows its insignificance to art history. He should take at least one art history class. Just because you see a few videos of artists buy an art book at waldenbooks for $ 9.99 does not mean you know what history or art are all about…talk to a real artist and let them guide you through your obvious misunderstanding of what art is all about. Hey you are an ignorant poser…anonymous is right ….a word of advice stick to music. The sooner you realize you are a poser in art the better off you are going to be.
