What is art if not a label ?

"What is art if not a label? We must learn to appreciate the work before we govern it with labels, it is the viewers biggest challenge. The work must be allowed to speak for itself so it can be heard, appreciated and understood". GT

Is "Chicano Art" or "Decorative Art" a label ? Can these labels have a negative impact on the work itself ?

Lets see what you think.....Comment area is open for debate.....

Art and artists, for that matter, will never escape the bane of labels. The first approach to artwork should be instinctive and almost reactionary. Then, time and patience should be given to contemplating the work. The observer should then use their knowledge and experience to conduct an evaluation of the work. Sure they can determine the value of the work and even determine whether it is "good" or "bad." That is the luxury of the observer as Art is subjective.
But in this determination, labels are often used as tools to figure out degrees of value and "goodness" or "badness." We may label a work as postmodern minimalist or abstract expressionist in order to correlate the work in the frame of Art History. It's a matter of placing a movie in a category. Wouldn't you react differently to watching a movie if, say, you found the movie Speed (starring keanu reeves) in the comedy section at blockbuster or in drama instead of Action?
So yes, we bring preconceived determinations when presented with labels . . . even titles of work. When we have a label, we know how we are supposed to react. Fortunately, it remains the onus of the artist to break through that label to cast away those preconceptions, either through talent, substance or message. Some artists accept the labels and use them to their advantage. Then, are they artists or merely johnny come latelys thinking they've invented fire?
I was going to end with something poignant, but I don't feel like it.
