I found this that could help..cgg

I find more meaning in a child's scribble or on the street than seeing a massive painting hung neatly on a wall. The idea of creating for no one but themselves or an accidental eye seems to make art worth doing. I think that having to come up with an image or category for yourself just to be marketable is not being an artist, just a good salesman.
How is art given value? By those standing to make reputations for themselves or their institutions.
Books need to be published, grants need continue coming in, and populations/demographics will be studied to create exhibits that will generate more sales in ticket sales. As an artist, I think you have to be willing to compromise to make a buck.

let me get this straight the only meaninful art is the art YOU create JC miller let me tell you someting there are alot of artists working their butts off to get into a gallery, showing their work and hanging their paintings neatly on a wall. There are good artists everywhere good artists that exhibit and good artists that don't care to exhibit...there is no difference the only difference is who knows how to distinguish good art from bad art. there are also alot of bad artists that exhibit ther work and alot of bad artist that don't exhibit their work..It's all about how bad you want to exhibt your work and if you want to or not..there is no difference it doesn't make your work better or worse.
1. The value of art is created with the first viewer who gave interest.
2.The value of art is real, worth nothing more than the poverty or the luxury that surrounds it.
3.Another millionare willing to buy it.
4. In death you take only the spirit, the cash you leave behind...

Yes! You are all rigth with your commentaries. As artits and painters; we all know that here in the Valley there is not a Market for art of any kind. Also we know that , even if we don't want to admitted; we all want to sell our paintings, some more than others have that necessity, for various reasons; self - steem, morality, pride in ourslves, etc...
We all know that here in our Rio Grande Valley, we have like a million doctors, and a million and a half of lawyers, and how many times, had any of us, seem any of them attend our exhibits, just to attend and support our spirit?. If They do not even want to pay our low -priced paintings, and They can afford it... just imagine the rest of the fructual community??!!!
Good point Carmen.
I agree
This has nothing to do with the content of the post, but, I want to say that the Freeman show deserves a look. There was no post on the poll. Those of you especially students can learn a lot from his process...give it a look...cgg
After reading my sister's Carmen commentary. Unfortunatelly I have to say the follwing; It may sound even a little more dissapointed than Her, but also it is the plain thuth. About ten or so years ago; Our beloved Aunt Carlotta Petrinna passed away, Our will stated that Her "Museum" to be converted into a " Community - type of Galery" . That was her returning favors to this tranquil and peaceful place, After, and getting all the family into a sole agreement not to open it., due to the facts that in this lovely place; We notice that a lot of the people in this community or I say; the majority of the population have this sense of " A False - Achievement - Mentality" , Which You all as artists will understand...maybe even worse;" The Educated People" can be or pretend to be Ignorant, Aphatetic and Naive!. Well We all can go on and on, and have a serious discution on this matter. Anyways, All The Petrinnas decided unanimously; that due to the above points; to rather open our Petrinna gallery in New York City in 1999. So far the results can not have been better: we had have exhibits from people from All over Europe, Argentina, Mexico, South and Central America, the phillipines, Japan, China, Korea, Canada, Puerto Rico, From all over The U. S. A., The Caribbean Islands, Cuba,... Etc, etc!!!
Not Only a Sad and False - Sense of Achievement, but so many inferiority - complexed issues!.
The Answer...by BR
Long ago in a dusty village
full of hinger, pain and strife
a man came forth with a vision of truth
and the way to a better life
he was convinced he had the answer
and he complelled people to follow along
but the hunger never vansihed
and the man was banished
and the village dried up and died
at a time when wise men peered
through glass tubes toward the sky
the heavens changed in predictable ways
and one man was able to find
that he had thought he found the answer
and he was quick to write his revelation
but as they were scutinized
in his colleagues eyes
he soon became a mockery
don't tell me the answer
I've got ideas too
but if you've got enough naivete
and you've got conviction
then the answer is perfect for you
an urban sprawl sits choking on its discharge
overwhelmed by industry
searching for a modern day savior from another place
inclined toward charity
everyone's begging for an answer
without regard to validity
the searching never ends
it goes on and on for eternity
it is easy to move up to a place where a market is established like New York. inferity comes from being lazy, or wanting things to come easy, its true, there are a lot of Docters , lawyers etc., in the valley, if a gallery would take the time to visit and invite them, not one time, but everytime they would eventually come out to see a show. alot of hard work would be required now and in the future. the Petrinnas decdied to move there gallery to new york good for them, but I dont agree with their statements. All I can say is congratulations to them for being successful somewhere else.
Thank You Cande! You just proved my point; about the false - sense of accomplishments and inferiority complexes; get art educated... do not be LAZY!
and according to Widikepia The word Naco means: Is a bad - mannered and poorly - educated person, due to it's lower socio - economic class - status.
dr zavaletta, who are you addressing your comment too?
“Mario” – Never said my work was meaningful. Certainly not the only work in the universe. I think if we want support from our community, then artists need to invest time educating them.
If you look at the majority of public school art programs in the valley, they are really poor. There is a reason why most of the student work is pencil and color pencils. If you check out other high school work upstate, 16 to 18 year old students are working with large scale digital photography and large canvases with obvious understanding of postmodern theory. Teachers are talking of partnerships with their school district and museums/university. I heard of their students preparing their portfolios for review to top art colleges. Those of you who were educated here like myself, do you think you were given every opportunity to learn at what you were good at? I
Certain valley school districts have no kilns, no budget for quality materials, or adequate facilities for teaching art. I would like to see a more established relationship between local colleges and valley schools. It would be nice to have professors reaching out to the high school students with lectures, invitations to shows, etc. It would be great if we had our school board members approving local artists to work with our children. It would be terrific if our museums hosted free art lessons sponsored by local businesses. I just don’t see that here at this time. Should we be surprised that these kids choose to be lawyers and doctors instead of an artist? Do we blame them if they know nothing of local art or choose to spend their money on something else? G.T. has the right idea of reaching out
with that car show. Gomez as well for exhibiting with local artists in the community. These people know why an artist should exhibit.
I remember working under the direction of Gomez on a large mural for a brownsville public school with Noel P.,Andrew S.,and Peter M.. We all volunteered to have fun , show off our talents.
We also did it for free. It was good to have the the staff and the kids see that art was a part of their lives. We should be willing to exhibit if means making change of where we live and the people we are part of.

To You Cande!!
