Fresh Angle to Harlingen Art: Gallery 218 Grand Opening
Gallery 218 to launch and revitalize the downtown Harlingen art scene.
Harlingen, TX, June 23, 2009—Well-known, newlywed art duo Ben & Anna Varela, along with owner Bill DeBrooke, eagerly announce the launch of Gallery 218. Their vision is to revitalize the downtown Harlingen community and art scene, since the setback of Hurricane Dolly. The plan is to showcase innovative and upcoming artists of the Rio Grande Valley via Gallery 218 and its grand opening. “We want to provide a platform for local artisans to exhibit their works,” says Ben Varela.
On Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Gallery 218 will be bustling with the spirit of fine art, music, guests, artists, hors d’oeuvres and wine. This event is open to the public and will be hosted by Ben & Anna and their featured artists. “We encourage every guest to feel welcome and have the total art experience,” expressed Anna.
When asked to describe her artwork in one sentence, Anna replies, “I paint to depict and record the domestic lives, culture, and celebrations of the Mexican-American people.” Ben followed to briefly explain his works with, “I distort reality in a form of a fantasy, dream-like world that represents past experiences in my journey through life.”
Ben and Anna are inviting fellow artists of the Rio Grande Valley to submit their work to be on exhibition for both the grand opening and thereafter. Artists that are interested in displaying their work at Gallery 218 should apply to Gallery218@gmail.com no later than July 6, 2009. Applicants need to include: name, address, phone, artist’s statement, resume, and no less than five attached photos of work.
